I don't understand, why would someone join a forum then start posting about text messages? This spam riddled world scares me, I hate spam... yuck!

The spambot also posted a link to a website in the article it posted - which google and other search engines will index and which will help strengthen the importance of it as a promotional device for the website.

A spambot is an automated computer program designed to assist in the sending of spam. Spambots usually create fake accounts and send spam using them, although in many cases it would be obvious that a spambot is sending it. This has led to the development of password-cracking spambots that are able to send spam using other people's accounts.

Forum spambots surf the web, looking for guestbooks, wikis, blogs, forums, and other types of web forms that it can then use to submit bogus content. These often use OCR technology to bypass CAPTCHAs. Some spam messages are targeted towards readers and can involve techniques of target marketing or even phishing, making it hard to tell real posts from the bot generated ones. Other spam messages are not meant to be read by humans, but are instead posted to increase the number of hyperlinks to a particular web site, to boost its search engine ranking.

And in India with labour being cheap they are used to manually bypass measures to impede automated spammers to er spam

I use Easy Calc Check PLUS on my websites to stop spampbots in their tracks as they are hopeless at simple sums (and it's much easier for legitimate humans to solve than the indecipherable captcha method), though the Indians have occasionally gotten past it.

Wow I never knew about that! My head still hurts! I don't get why they would spam us with an elaborate explanation of text message marketing or whatever though?? I thought it used to be mostly spam advertising.

So whats a 'google bot' or 'bing bot' on the members list? Is that someone looking at the forum via a google search?

Bluntly put, you get friendly crawlers and unfriendly crawlers or bots as they may be called. They are like spiders that crawl the web digging up info for whatever reasons. Things like googlebot is where google look over websites gathering information about the content and quality of websites and how many links in and out of the site there are and where they go too or what type of content they are connected too etc etc. Google can then then index the content and give the site a rating and position on the search engine i.e. how close to the top do you get. These are so called friendly search bots. You will then get unfriendly or nefarious bots that scan the web for other purposes, these could involve spamming or link propagating/collecting. Linkbacks to a website to try and improve Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for when the search bots come along.

Now your head hurts.

Ohhhh! That made sense, what a crazy cyber world this is. I do find it a bit scary, when thinking about all the malicious efforts put in by so many people around the world.

I wonder what would happen if we lost electricity for a couple of years...
