Bike wont run, need help

Post by Timothyblythe240z »

I got my 99 vtr 1000 from a trade, R/R was said to be bad. before trading the bike was ran without the R/R to make sure all was working correctly. the bike was ran two other times for less than a minute without R/R, i replaced it a few months ago, let it sit for three months now it wont run. i replaced the CDI box, still didn't help.
i checked and found i was not getting spark, took off the converter unit and put it back on now i have spark.
problem is the spark is not consistent. if i squirt gas in the carbs, after turning the engine over many times it will finally run for a few seconds then die.
I'm thinking its the converter unit, along with fouled spark plugs causing the problem, but im not completely certain the carbs are doing there job correctly. i have taken them apart and cleaned the ports and jets all is clear of debris and looks to be in order. if i take compressed air and blow it through the carb i can see the mist of fuel spray out the other side, but only when the needle is raised.
any suggestions would be helpful, thanks

Take the vacuum line going into the fuel tap off the outlet that points vertically down and fit it onto the one at 90 degrees.

We've all done it.....

Ok.
The fuel tap is operated by a vacuum, and there is a black thinnish tube that comes form near the rear carb to head rubber, and goes back to the fuel tap, which is located under the back of the tank.
If the tank has been taken off, it's easy to push the tube onto the drain spigot which comes out of the tap and points downwards.
You need to pull the vac line off that one, if that's where it is, and push it onto the spigot that comes out of the side of the fuel tap.

I gotcha.
that line had been snipped and blocked with a screw, i was curios where that went.
Though i'm not sure how it would run before without it?

That might be the one from the front cylinder- they are often left connected and blocked like that so that you can quickly and easily connect a carb balancer.
You want to be looking at the one on the LH side running backwards into the fuel tap.

No probs.
We've all done it, like I said.
It's either that or a failed front CCT and bent exhaust valves that gets people onto the forum.

after taking apart the carbs the last time the TPS broke, didn't notice that it wasn't in its slot when i put the carb brackets back on and snapped the plastic. also tightened the choke cable to much and broke that too
i have found a replacement tps at $90 from motosport, seems to not be available on ebay.
but i cannot find a replacement choke cable. any idea where i can get these parts ?

Second-hand choke cables should be on ebay or order a new one from David Silvers - if plastic fittings broke where it connects into the carb then try contacting gl_s_r to see if he has any

Doctor Who.

One of the more common mistakes when working on the bike is to reconnect the fuel tank vacuum hose on the wrong part of the fuel tank petcock/diaphragm.
