Sidestand

Post by dansrockin »

Hi all, I've spent a few days with my vtr now and I'm loving it! I've also found a few niggles that need sorting.
The first of which is the sidestand. It seems to sit to far forward when it's down, which makes the bike look as though bits leaning over to the left too much. It looks like there's a very small bend in it, but nothing too major. It almost looks like the stopper part is too short.
Is this a common thing on VTRs? Or is it more likely that someone has sat on the bike with the sidestand down and put a bit too much weight on the stand?
And is it an easy fix? I take it can just unbolt the whole unit and replace if I can source one?
Cheers
Dan

Unless it has noticeably bent then they do seem to look as if they are leaning over a bit. However as someone recently found when they used a bit of wood to get it more upright it then blew over…

Look on fleabay for a replacement if yours is wonky - just put it on a paddock stand unbolt, unclip spring and disconnect switch and replace.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

It may not be bent, it's just got a very slight curve in it, I've not seen another to compare it to. It just looks like it's leaning over further than any other bike I've had. To be honest I'd rather it be leant over than more upright to prevent the above happening! Lol
Thanks

It could just be that the bike has had a shock spacer fitted- a 6mm spacer raises the back end far enough to let the bike lean over further than normal.

Lift the seat off, then look under the frame on the shock mount and see if there is a spacer or washers between the top shock mount and the frame.

But all is not lost; you can buy a Blackbird sidestand which is a little longer.
Or weld (or bolt) a thin section under the sidestand foot.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Blackbird stand is sraight swap but you may want/need to extend the foot prong as it's really short on the BB one...stubby short just over an inch.

Heres one I did earlier...

What Tony said... When I bought my bike early this year it always looked like it was about to tip over when on ss. Turned out bike had the 6mm shim fitted above rear shock. A longer stand is a quick fix.
If this be the case for you, the X11 stands also bolt straight on.

As the others have said, anything that raises the rear end will make the bike lean over more than standard. That could include (as Tony says) rear shock spacer, yokes dropped down the forks, or an after market shock with adjustable ride height.

If you post up a photo of your side stand, we should be able to tell if it's bent or not,

Chris.

Thanks all, these are the best pics I can get. Not really showing much of a curve, it just seems to sit too far forward to me.

That's not too far over, just try pulling it over towards the LH side and see how hard it is.
The wind won't blow it over.

Looks like there's a slight bend, just above the toe prong.

Like Tony says, doesn't look like it'll fall over any time soon.

I agree, it doesn't look to be leaning over too far, but (as Jamoi says) the side stand does look in the 2nd pic to be slightly bent. Also the foot of the stand in the same pic doesn't look like it's sitting flat on the ground which would suggest it is bent. Mind you that might be due to the paving slabs not being entirely flat. I suggest you try it again on a flat piece of tarmac or concrete, see what the lean angle is like then, and see if the stand foot sits flat on the ground.

The guys will be impressed you managed to get the wheelie bins in one of your shots

Thanks all, the foot of the stand does lift slightly at the front so I guess it is slightly bent. The bike seems fairly solid for now but I'll try and find one and get it swapped soon.
Thanks again
