Shim sizes
Re: Shim sizes
Dark, will you still be coming over on the Fri before workshop day? Just curious as you have sorted clearances now?

Re: Shim sizes
Interesting way to do the shims. Bike shop basically got the rear to TDC then strapped all the cam-sprockets and chain as well as the crank & without loosening the tensioner removed the cam off the sprocket did the shims then refitted & repeated the procedure with the front at TDC. Novel method, all seems to be fine with the timing thus far.
Re: Shim sizes
That's one way to do it I suppose
They must have had things strapped down pretty tight. How did they strap a crank
or did they strap the flywheel or even put a piston stop on the piston crown to stop the crank turning.

Re: Shim sizes
You wouldn't need to strap the crank, just cable-tie the cam chain to the sprockets.
The cam ramp hasn't enough force to rotate the crank- leave the plugs in, though.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Shim sizes
They had no plugs hence they tied the crank. I seem to trust the guys as they are engineers rather than fitters. Time will tell when I first fire it up. But good to know its another option that can be used from Allah:)tony.mon wrote:You wouldn't need to strap the crank, just cable-tie the cam chain to the sprockets.

Re: Shim sizes
Like lloydie said, you will need to remember this, and tell the next owner, to prevent massive confusion the next time the clearances need done. As the sizes marked on the shims won't be correct, so the size you calculate for the replacement will be wrong and much head scratching will result
But if they were a good machine shop they would have anticipated this and ground the markings off so there is no option but to get the micrometer out and measure the shim
