steering damper options ?

Post by budd »

not bothered with a steering damper since the early 90s the last one I had fitted was on an FZR600 and I ended up bending it double with my shin when I went over the bars (it broke my tibia in 5 places) so since then I’ve kind of avoided them.
But while I was out yesterday I had a massive slapper (tank slapper that is not the female kind  ) so I’m thinking maybe I should revisit the steering damper issue, just looking for some input on what type and position I should be considering.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

What have you done with the suspension Budd? Is it riding high at the rear and low at the front? The Storm as stock is a very stable old beastie, so i'm surprised you provoked it into a slapper.
There are a few firms that make them for the storm including some cheapie ones from China. I can't comment on the success of any of them as I haven't got one on mine. Good luck with it fella

Basically it just caught me out a bit, I was going out of a 30 zone on to a derestricted stretch and as nothing was coming I decided to overtake the car in frontt who was still doing 30, this put me on the wrong side of the road and I’d given it a bit of gas so the front wheel was just skimming the road, which generally wouldn’t be a problem.

But there were some road makings in the road indicating the approaching 30 limit (remember I’m on the wrong side of the road), in their wisdom the council have painted a massive 30 and some lines across the road well these lines were raised I guess to give ‘rumble’ effect to remind the cars they are entering a village and to slow down. The combination of these lines and light front end caused it to get a bit lively to say the least, it was never going to have me off but it certainly got my attention.

As for the bike it’s raised 6mm at the rear with a 60 profile rear tyre (180/60) so this will have an effect on stability, also I’ve just refitted the OE front springs after selling the progressives it had in it, so the front is definitely much less planted than it was. The plan is to get a set of linear springs in it ASAP, this I’m sure will help but it just got me thinking that the roads aren’t getting any better and a pothole would have the same effect if hit by a light or descending front, maybe a damper would offer that little bit of resistance to the resulting ‘slapper’.

My old storm was planted ,but hard on the gas at about 120 front went really light,as in skimming the road, worrying at first then it used to make me laugh in my helmet, never felt dangerous just lively.

yeah I think it's normal, but the lines/ridges in the road really set it off into a quite impressive tank slapper, it's probably a one off because apart from the ‘light’ feeling you mention it’s pretty benign and as you say not generally an issue

get the front springs sorted ASAP, 6mm at the back with stock front end is going to make it a bit slappy.

i have an old style sprint damper fitted, but run it on min settings and in truth I only fitted it as I had it in my store cupboard, i don't need
