Head bearings advice

Post by pstormer »

Hi all. Removed the forks to paint the lowers and found the head bearings are goosed  . Quick search on the bay and a full set of taper bearings with seals are on the way :D . As I haven't done a set in a while I would appreciated any advice on how to get the right tightness so as not to over tighten them or have them to loose :? .
Cheers

From my experience recently, I found that mine kept coming loose. I solved this by making sure the top yoke nut was torqued up correctly.

There is a thread in the knowledge base section which I wrote, it takes you through the correct setting.

Steve, I have to Say mine never come loose after first setting and I think it is down to the races not being hammered fully home hence they move slightly after assembly

when i did my fork swap and put in all balls taperd bearings, for a few weeks they kept coming loose and id get slop in the bearings. i finally fixed it by adding preload to the bearings (having a friend push down on the front of the bike while i torqued the nut to the proper spec)

plus i think it took a few weeks to have the races really seat themselves properly due installing the races with improper tools.

That's not uncommon when fitting tapered bearings. It takes a couple of 100 miles to get them seated and bedded in. So expect to be making slight tweaks to the adjustment first off.

rear paddock stand and use a car jack under the sump. make sure the stand is as far back as it can go for stability, and put some weight on the pillion seat
