Front Brakes

Post by nt1980 »

Hi All

I think i have an issue with my front brakes due to the fact they don't really pull up that good.

The only thing i can compare with is my track bike now this has braided lines, pro lite discs, brembo master cylinder, and bendix pads
with this i can brake to the point that the back wheel is bouncing.

Now my road bike has braided lines new discs as the old ones were warped i have serviced the calipers and have a stock set of pads in
i have done this over time to see what difference it makes and yes there is a slight improvement but they still dont bite that good.

Is my comparison unfair.

Just thought id ask for your ideas or thoughts. :?:

I have just bought some sintered pads to see if this makes any improvement.

Thanks Justin

If you have have serviced them, had the pistons out cleaned etc and all is bled off with no trapped air then they are as good as they will get. Your comparing Apples with Pears against your race bike with those parts. You could upgrade the master cylinder to CBR 600 one and for even better add CBR 600 callipers too. What's the lever like? are you sure all the air is bled out as they have a habit of getting trapped air in the master.

I have EBC sintered pads, EBC discs, braided hoses. All the rest is OEM. I can easily get the back wheel hopping but, TBH, I never find that I need that much braking for road riding.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

I have CBR954 callipers and braided lines to go on mine when my sintered pads show up.
I can confidently get away with using 1 finger on my Bandit with the OEM lines and pads. The storm brakes require a leap of faith every time.
It may only be my opinion but it's mine!

I never got my std brakes to be as good as I expected, so I run a CBR600f4 caliper and master set up now and that is MUCH MUCH better.

it also has armstrong disks and Brembo pads, but the biggest change was the caliper/master.

see my thread in knowlege base for info

Weird one this, everybody seems to expect different things. I have rebuilt all my brake system and find the fronts great as bog standard. I have just sold a fazer with the yamaha blue dots which were awesome, but I dont find the nissins noticeably worse.

I am really not convinced by these hard HH pads though. My bestie has just put them on his blade and they make a horrible noise and you can actually see the scoring on the the discs where they are eating into the disc. I think the normal GG are totally fine for road riding where you want progressive and feel.

Totally agree
I wasn't impressed with mine :(
People keep moaning about Brakes, but have they ever bothered to service them, anything that is not looked after will not work properly :confused plus anyone considering upgrading or improving there brakes should really think about having their forks done first, what's the point of having brilliant brakes if your forks just bottom out every time you need them :confused
I binned the EBC HH pads, took the callipers off, serviced them, replaced the fluid, fitted Honda OE pads, cleaned and rubbed the discs with Scotchbrite, made sure the bobbins were free and bingo, what a difference, for normal road use and more they are more than adequate  by the way yes my forks were Rodgered about 3 years ago

To be honest I never realised we had so many Britsh Superbike contenders on this forum

I've got standard brakes, fitted braided hoses, ebc HH pads. Just whip them off every now and then to give them a good clean up. I can stop as quick as the new Gixxers, blades etc I ride with. Granted that's on the road, but a little tlc will keep you from running too deep.

P.s I have huge manly hands too, which helps

Kev, I did all that and they were still below average, and I would rather have good brakes than more power any day hence the upgrade calipers & master........... and like you I also rate the std Honda pads, the brembos have more initial bite, but the feel and the power is no better than honda [and no zzzzzz noise like you get with EBC].

I still think they could be improved for my BSB debut :D

Okay after my visit to snetterton this weekend i managed to get some time in the garage to have a look over what i had stated above

I took the pads out and found that the right hand side disc inside wasnt touching the disc in the middle but on the outer edges fine may be a dodgy pad these were standard oem honda pads.

So i cleaned the calipers up got rid of any dirt even though they were pretty clean, installed some new pads this time i have used gold fren pads good enough for the road and not so heavy on my pocket.

Took it out and its transformed the bike they now stop the bike at a good distance.

So i think the issue was may be a bad set of oem pads and thinking back they were probably at the point of being that bad they were dangerous.

Yes it does nose dive but i thought they all do that with the std forks :D

Im now happy they work as good as i think they should :cool2

Be careful with Goldfen pads, they are total shite. I have had bikes where several people agreed the discs were warped, and it turned out to be how crap the pads were, changed for ebc or honda and discs were fine. They can do all sorts of horrid things.

I don't even know what brands my front pads are. They are cheap cheerful brandless and cost £10 a pair but they stop me.........eventually
