oic.

"looking at the c spanner I wondered if it would help to cut the little heel bit off it as this appears to be lifting it off the collar?"

what I was thinking was that the heel bit was lifting the "c" part of the spanner off of the ring? now I know that the other picture is not the Honda piece perhaps I wont.

No that heel bit is there to stop it from slipping off. The pointy pit at the front of the C and the heel bit at the back of the C work together as a team to turn the shock. I think what Chris is saying about the nut is to weld one on where the heel bit is to help with holding it in place. The problem with the Honda C spanner is the more that heel bit slips off, the more it wares down. As it wares down more, the more it starts to slip off  It's a vicious circle.

It's all down to technique and alternating between left and right, but I must admit these bikes are particularly tricky to gain access and move the spanner. Don't forget to use the extension on the spanner in the toolkit.
