Suspension query

Got the bike running last night with new motor after complete rebuild. All is well and sounds lovely. Thanks to the guys for advice on wiring/piping. My rear suspension seems really hard though. NO SAG and only dips if you bounce on the rear hard, seems like rock hard spring with no damping. Had all the linkage to bits but nothing seized. Hmmm seems strange. Any ideas?

Is it a std shock ?

They are really hard springs on them. Plus depending how old it is it might just be fercked...

I would suggest swapping with someone local...but I know that's not a very helpful suggestion given your location...

I had 2 spare but sold both in the last 3 months or so...I'll check but I don't think I have another...

Thanks Mac. To be honest I think it's just really firm, just wheeled the old girl outside to get some pics of her at the stage its at now, anyway it DOES SAG slightly when I sit on it, I just think it's very firm and I never really noticed it. It's funny how you end up scrutinizing every thing on the bike once you re build it. I am listening intently to the motor trying to see if the cct is too tight+????.

Oh and another thing, the front sprocket is slightly loose on the shaft, the bolt is tight and the washer is on it. The replacement engine and the blown motor both just have a bolt and washer......is this right? Seems like it needs another washer on it. Maybe it's supposed to sit foolish on the shaft.

Anyway, I am replacing the rear shock shortly with an Ohlins and doing the blade front end thing so that should help things.

Yes bolt,washer then sprocket on shaft...IIRC it should have a little play in it but I could be wrong...

Re the shock what's the top collar set on ? It is adjustable may be it's up to high for you. Bit of a bugger to change even with the tool kit c-spanner but can be done with a drift...

Mine also has a little bit of play on the front sprocket, but only sideways, and there is no movement on the splines. I wasn't sure if it was right or not, but it didn't seem to cause any issues so I have left it as is. Has the washer as mentioned. Is this standard on all storms??

They're all like that, slightly wobbly, or "self-aligning".

Standard Honda sprockets have rubber discs either side which quieten the chain side plates as they contact the sprocket, but apart form that they make no difference.

Don't forget the rebound screw on the bottom of the shock, on right near the suspension lower. This may need some adjustment!!! but basically the rear shock is mostly over-sprung and not the best so you kinda have to make do with what you have unless you go aftermarket.
