Has anyone used on of these or know anything about them? On Ebay and seem extremely cheap?

anythings better than the stock unit.

although there is no compression damping adjustment. for not much more than that you can get a used ohlins triple clicker with remote preload adjuster (no need to get out spanners for preload adjustment)

around the same price you can find a penske or a fox etc...

Hmm, yes true the thing about 2nd hand shocks though is unless you know where it's been its a gamble 're condition/valving/spring weight etc. I was going the Ohlins route but am considering Nitron instead just because of the money saving going toward the blade front end.
The standard rear shock is so stiffly sprung and underhanded.

Sounds to me like you have thought it through thoroughly. Take a service and new weight related spring into consideration with the price on 2nd hand units.

Yes exactly Carl, if I bought a 2nd hand shock I would send it straight off for service giving them my weight/bike/riding style etc, by the time it gets back its no longer a second hand bargain, as well to have ordered a "less expensive/bling" make, but have a new/custom made shock and saved some cash to spend in another area.

It's soooo tempting when you see a 2nd hand ohlins for 300 quid BUT rarely will it suit you or your bike without being fettled, you will look cool.........but be all over the road and not having fun at all. Anyway that's my two penneth.

But most shocks, unless you get it custom made, are gonna need to be sorted for your weight anyways so new or used, if you want optimum performance, its gonna cost you

Not really because if one was to buy say...a new Nitron shock you can specify the spring weight so have the right spring. Also being new there is no need for a service/re-gas.

thats not how ever company does it. a lot of companys (ohlins and others) fit a standard spring then you can purchase another spring if you want. i do know some will put whatever spring you want though.

2nd hand Ohlins at £300 service and new spring for your weight should be no more than £150 = £450 for an as new Ohlins, how much are they new ? a lot more I would think. equivalent Nitron is around £550 new. Nitron does have ride height adjustment where the Ohlins doesn't but you don't really need it on a storm, Ohlins + 3mm spacer if you need it higher will work well, but try standard height first.

When I had an Ohlins the standard spring worked very well, I was about 172lb at the time but think it would work for weights from 165-190lb,thats weight without leathers etc.

I bought one of these brand new, specific to me and my bike

http://www.elkasuspension.com/download/ ... rcycle.pdf

It's the Elka stage 4 and works out at £433.80 at todays exchange rate. It might be worth giving them a call and see if they can do anything for you.
Mines been great and looks just as good as when it was bought ( although it does need a service) so far I've got around it with just a little twiddle on the dials.

How long ago did you get it? as VTR1000F isn't on their application list - discontinued?

A bit of misinformation in this thread.

It has been stated that some shock company fit a standard spring to new shocks, this is untrue. Well maybe some of the low budget or no name brands might do this but not the reputable companies

Most, if not all, aftermarket shocks will be set to whatever specs you specify (i.e. which spring for your weight and a shim stack mod if needed) when purchased new.

Just wanted to clear that point up as it is one of the factors that needs consideration when deciding between new or used.

A lot do, Penske, Maxton, Nitron to name a few make them to your spec, Ohlins come from the factory with the spring they've worked out themselves, it's up to the supplying dealer to spring it to suit you, therefore buy your Ohlins from an Ohlins service centre not a mail order specialist, although as stated before the std spring will work for the average weight rider. I believe WP also offer a std spring, but just buy from a service centre and have it sorted to suit.
