New OCMD project?

Post by mik_str »

So, am giving some thought to replacing the OEM mechanical water pump with an electric unit (as some on the Superhawk forum have done). This would for the following two reasons: reduce mechanical drag (free up some power, maybe 2-3 hp?) and also to get better management of collnat temps (with use of a digital temp controller). Part 2 of the project would be to replace my existing oil cooler (air-to-oil, same design as OEM, but larger) with a unit from a CBR900RR (Fireblade), which is a liquid-cooled design (Honda CBR900 CBR 900 RR CBR900RR 1996 Engine Oil Filter Cooler Bolt Set | eBay).

This part would serve two purposes:

1) would provide a better management of engine oil temperature (especially if used with a controller on electric water pump), good for engine longevity

2) slight lowering of center of gravity (remove cooler and oil from its present location right up close to the steering head and dropping all the relevant replacement weight to down low adjacent to the oil filter). Minor, I know... but hey, OCMD remember :)

Thoughts?

I looked at the leccy pump and controller, but it seems an expensive way to buy 2Bhp.

When I'm running a high comp/ignition advancer combo I run a four=row oil cooler from an SP1 and it keeps it in the normal standard range.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

electric water pump is pretty cheap mod, you don´t need to control operation - see here if you trust :-) http://www.superhawkforum.com/forums/mo ... ers-32464/

All you need is EBP and some hoses and clamps to connect. And you have to be able to connect it - have no doubt you are :-)

Actually you can buy Bosch pump, it is exactly the same as Davies Craig. I bought Davies Craig, and there was BOSCH molded on the body of the pump.

Mik I'm worried that this OCMD is starting to become a problem. There are helpline numbers for these addictions

I know... on the positive side, I managed to turn back the tide in record time in this latest episode, so maybe there's hope, lol
