Valve Covers Seals & Electrical Modules
Re: Valve Covers Seals & Electrical Modules
I concur - use if necessary the silicone sealer sparingly on the bottom face to keep the rubber gasket to hold in place when fiting the cam cover back on top.
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Sorry Al, I missed that in my eagerness to get to the end of the thread.AMCQ46 wrote:as said, I ALWAYS refit the cam boxes without any added sealant. just remove any sealant from either part and wipe some oil on the sealing face then assemble. never leaked yet

Re: Valve Covers Seals & Electrical Modules
Al thanks for the advice and tips, etc. The reason I was a bit paranoid about using sealant was I did not realise the round part of the half moons actually have a recess in them to fit into the cylinder head and was thinking of using sealant to hold them in place. But now I can see how it will all fit together without any issues.AMCQ46 wrote:don, I didn't capitalise the ALWAYS to shout at you for not spotting that in the earlier threadthunderbolt wrote:Sorry Al, I missed that in my eagerness to get to the end of the thread.AMCQ46 wrote:as said, I ALWAYS refit the cam boxes without any added sealant. just remove any sealant from either part and wipe some oil on the sealing face then assemble. never leaked yet, it was more to point out that I never use sealant.

Can someone give me a technical explanation on how the two electrical modules of the VTR operate? What job do they do and how do they do it? Does the TPS activate one of the units, are there other sensors on the bike that bring these modules into operation.
Thanks
Cheers
Don

Here you go Don http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 43#p334848 the box in your top pic is the Ignition Control Module ICM (ECU to generalise) and the one in your bottom pic is the Converter unit and as your is a later model it also has the HISS Electronics. Mac is correct as to the positioning, nothing unusual with there placement.
As for sealant, I spot the inside of the cover and attach the gasket. It's not just the half moon bits but also the U shape along where the plug goes and also the front edge, especially on the front cylinder as it's left hanging and can drop out the front when tightening down the cover. In an ideal world and with a gasket in good condition it should sit in the recessed grooves naturally without dropping out, but that's not always the way. A little sealant does no harm and is great when one removes the cover along with the gasket as one unit. It make life easy when refitting.

Re: Valve Covers Seals & Electrical Modules
Cancel last reply I have NOW read the link you provided Carl and now know what the converter does - I knew it as an igniter on other bikes I own.
Thanks
Thanks

Converter Unit, Igniter is the same thing just different names. Technically it's a converter unit but Igniting is kinda what it's doing, hence some people calling them an igniter, so more of a slang terminology.
