Re: Gear Indicator
None are easy to fit sadly .
And I can only comment on the data tool digigear as I have one fitted .
You need to be able to solder and have a sturdy rear paddock stand to fit and program it .
2hour job as you need to wire it in behind the clocks .

Re: Gear Indicator
I posted how-to in Workshop Knowledgebase for the Acumen combined gear and voltmeter.
It's on the second page.
Still fitted, still working fine.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Gear Indicator
I have an Acumen digital gear indicator (the one without the volt meter like Tony's). Similar to the Datatool that Lloydie has I presume, as the Acumen is also connected to the wires on the back of the speedo pod (soldered on). Setting up is the same for both by the sounds of it. One thing I will say I found with Acumen was their back up service. I had a slight problem getting mine to program properly after fitting it, they were very helpful.
One nice little touch the Acumen has (The Datatool one may also have this) is a light sensor. That means the digital gear read out dims down when it gets dark.
I know some will say a gear indicator is not necessary, personally I find mine very useful,
Chris.

Yep the datatool has the dimmer too and I too think it's a good mod and rely on it not to drop into 1st gear when I only want 2nd

Re: Gear Indicator
Hi, Thanks for the replies the 2 mentioned are the one`s I was looking at but there is about £50 difference in them, the reason I fancy one is a mate of mine just bought a BMW K1300 S and I had a go on it and found it useful on that
Re: Gear Indicator
I think gpi's are a great idea and it's on my to do list at some point. My mate has a Datatool one on his vfr but I've noticed if you down shift quickly it gets confusedsirch345 wrote:I have an Acumen digital gear indicator (the one without the volt meter like Tony's). SH#T HAPPENS!!!!!!!!
Re: Gear Indicator
They'll all get confused if you slip the clutch, as they work on the ratio between revs and speedo.
ALso you might need to reprogram if you alter the gearing a lot, but mine coped fine with a 15 tooth front instead of a 16.

Re: Gear Indicator
that reminds me I must finish my little project of the gpi mounted inside the dash.......
forgot all about it......doh!!!!!!
I only got one because of hitting first gear when I wanted second, not the best feeling when you lock up the rear wheel just before a bend....

Re: Gear Indicator
the data tool can be fooled but only for a few seconds and it soo catches up . mainly dropping 2 gears at a time never confused it on the up shift or by dragging out a gear .
ive had different gear ratios on it to and never had to re-teach it .i also think its how you teach it if you do it right the better it is

Re: Gear Indicator
My Acumen does take a little time to keep up if you change gear really quickly, but it's pretty good for normal riding I find. Nothing to do with not being programmed properly.Watty wrote: I think gpi's are a great idea and it's on my to do list at some point. As Lloydie says, brilliant for not going into first gear by mistake. Also handy for not trying for 7th gear

Re: Gear Indicator
when i had it on the blade it wasn't that good tbh as it was easy to confuse or it confused me easy .
when programming it on the storm it seams less important to hold the revs as the designated rpm 2k if i remember right and it still read right, however on the blade you had to get it dead on in every gear for it to read right
so whatever brand you get read the programming instructions right and it may take you a few times to get it right but they are worth it when fitted and i wouldn't be without one again
