Welding Questions Help

Anyone any idea about welding on here that could me some advice



To weld a washer onto that sprocket shaft what welder / wire or rod would i require?

if i was to get an Arc welder what type of rod would i need?

Is a mig better suited to this? how thick should the wire be?

never welded before but cannot use the bike due to the shaft being wombles as some previous wonker used the bike with no circlip so now it wont stay in place as the shaft end is knurled off

tried to tap it as the hole was 8.5mm so tried to M10 Tap it, man that sprocket shaft is made of some hard sh1t!! taps wouldn't even wombles make a scratch on it


Washer i would be trying to spot weld onto it would be an M10 one of these

If you've never welded before I wouldn't even attempt it, but for something like that I'd rather replace the shaft, sorry!

Well thats not a very can do attitude...

Its had a washer welded in place before to hold the circlip in place before being removed to put another sprocket on.

no other option and don't have the time or or resources to replace shaft, bike is a GAS GAS EC 300 and parts are scarce

Weld doesn't have to be neat or tidy, just good enough to hold a washer onto the shaft, there will be no load on the weld its just to stop a circlip from dropping off

Need this bike running asap so the gixxer can come off the road

You wouldn't be able to change the sprocket, and you would be amazed how quick that sprocket will wear once you can't change it.

New shaft would be best but tapping it and putting a bolt on the end is certainly feasible. some bikes use a bolt and washer there anyway. You might need to run a drill through just to get rid of some of the hardening on the surface. or just take your bike to an engineering shop to get them to tap it.

The reason it's not 'can do' is because if you can't weld, you 'can't do'.

I can weld, and the thing with a job like that is it's very simple but you have to get it spot on first time, once you start to weld you are welding for maybe 2 seconds, so if it's not spot on straight away, you won't get a proper weld and it WILL drop off. You will just get a lump off nasty cleg stuck on with spit.

Anyone can weld, but it takes practise and when you start it usually takes a run up to get a decent bead going so welding a seam is much easier. Needs to be mig welded. You don't want to be doing it every time you need a sprocket changed unless you have your own welder.

Its had it on previous, just been ground off to replace sprockets, changing the shaft is not an option.

All im asking is if you know what wire it would need can you let me know, i don't mind if it looks like a dog sh1t of a weld mate, i'll do some practice welds on another shaft or gear a gear i've got kicking about

Tapping it is a no no, ran a drill down it to try and remove a little but taps just won't make a mark on it

if you can't or won't give advice on which welder or wire please do not continue to comment.

Bog standard mig welding with bog standard mild steel wire.

Mig it Seb 0.6 wire would be good enough. Like you said have a good play on some hardened shafts first. Its not an ideal fix but needs must sometimes. You'll never learn to weld if you don't have a go. Good luck mate

The washers are stainless, I am not sure the shaft is stainless so you need none stainless washers

Sebb why not drill a thin hole through the shaft at the end and stick a split pin through it?
