US/UK VTR Project.
Hey guys. So I've had this bike for over a year but it's been literally a world away for most of that time. It's spent that time in Florida while I lived in South Korea. Well recently I've moved to the UK and have been reunited with my bike.
The VTR is in working condition, but it's going to need some work in order for it to pass an MOT.
Heres a short list of what it needs:
-Work on the headlight. It has an HID light but not the projector. So the beam is spread out which may not pass.
-Brakes. All of the rotors are probably original and will most likely need replacement as well as the brake pads.
-Tires. Rear tire doesn't hold air past a week. Tread is getting low as well. Will have to replace both
tires.
-Front turn signals. They are missing. Not too much of a big deal, but something I need to buy.
-Rear brake doesn't work. The bike has steel braided brake lines but the rear line is real old. Will have to replace it.
-Exhaust. It has a Two Brothers 2 into 1 exhaust. I can almost guarantee it will fail the MOT based on the fact it is "for off road use only."
Now im not nocking people here, but no one seems to know how to link pictures here. Im not one of those guys. Ill post pictures quite often.

If the exhaust has "off road only" stamped on it then your right it won't pass an MOT, but if the mot tester can't see it
as for noise it's not supposed to be significantly louder than the same bike with an original exhaust, but if the tester is half deaf who know's
again... Best to talk to your tester before the bike goes in for the mot.
Headlight needs to have a flat beam or kick up to the left, if it kicks to right it can simply have a small piece of tape added so the beam is flat and it will get an advisory note.
why do you need to change the rotor's/discs, if they're not warped and not worn below the minimum limit then they'll be ok. minimum limit should be stamped on the disc. if it's debatable the tester should not get a micrometer out, that's not part of the mot kit, he should pass and advise.
EDIT : having seen your pictures now and the very short can you may need to hunt for a very deaf or sympathetic mot tester, try a Harley specialist as all their testers must be deaf

That's not an exhaust. Looks more like a missile launcher aimed at N Korea to me

Don't know how I missed this thread. Welcome to the forum Chris and nice to see another Matte Black one. They are quite rare over here.
One thing that springs to mind is the electrical wiring for the indicators with it being a Superhawk. Aren't they designed to be switched on all the time but flash when your want turn or something like that.
I believe the wiring is different. Some of our US friends will confirm no doubt. Actually here go....have a look at the following link. You have both the UK and US there.

The discs are "original." They are very grooved and I'm sure they need replacing along with the brake pads.

You may have missed this thread because I only just started it about 2 hours ago. Wiring is the same. As for the turn signals, I prefer them to be on all the time and blink when turning. I am able to register it with no problems. It just needs a valid MOT, tax and insurance.

So my wife has agreed to let me spend some dosh to get it in shape. I think the wise way to spend, is to find a donor bike. I found two near Birmingham, but they are a little far away from Thetford. Hopefully going to look at one in Cambridge next week.

Your right on both counts.As for the turn signals, I prefer them to be on all the time and blink when turning. Probably won't be allowed here though...such a nanny state

IMHO, turn signals the are always on and only blink when in use (turning), can be considered a safety feature. What do you want doing to it?
I could probably help you get it to MOT standard but would probably recommend going with standard parts were possible. At least that way you would get a road legal bike that you could work on at you leisure.
i.e. standard headers and cans, standard electrics / lights etc. This would not cost mega money as the standard bit come pretty cheap

I think im going to find a donor bike and go from there. I basically just need it to pass an MOT and I can tinker on it from there (add the belly fairing, change the tail… ).

there was a guy with a red bike in Cambridge, it had ohlins, termignoni carbon cans, renthals, custom elsemade seat, red with gold wheels and more, I think he wanted 1400/1500, would be a good buy, you could always sell the parts you don't use to claw some money back.....chrisgreer23 wrote:So my wife has agreed to let me spend some dosh to get it in shape.
