Engine oil contains small bits of metal

Post by Storm Trooper »

Just done an oil and filter change on the bike, and looking at the bottom of the oil pan (old wash basin which is grey with black specs) there are a few tiny specs of silver. I mean they are tiny, just about visible, and not a huge amount, so was wondering if they could be remnant from my cam cap failure last year. They are not picked up by a magnet and you can barely feel them between your fingers. Bike runs perfect, only noise apart loud cans, is ticking from the carb sliders.

Only concern is I have a 400 mile trip to west of Scotland next weekend, then a 2000 mile trip to France in 6 weeks time!

Could these have come from the cap failure, or is there possible issues?

I had a cam cap failure end of last year where it split on the front exhaust cam.

Sounds like aluminium. I would do another oil change with hot oil then drain it through a stocking ( Careful boys!!!) then have a look. Probably just what you have said, not known or heard of any piston/skirt issues on these bikes. Hope its ok for you.
missing the noise, not the vibes. However never say never!

What did the old broken camshaft holder cap and camshaft head bearings look like :?: If you could see where some of the aluminium had been worn away on either or both of those, at a guess I would say that's where the bits in your oil came from.
