to be fair what they spend on the flypast is minimal in comparison to what they spend on ongoing operations. All these eyes in the sky cost a fortune even plods helicopter, that's something like £2,500 an hour to run 
Still for what it does, it's cheaper than employing more plod on the street. The next thing will be to get rid of them and have drones, even cheaper still.Sorry wicky I cant find the bloody link. But there was an incident a couple of months back where the USS accidentally opening a missile door or something which showed as as act of force to the Russians. It may have even been the Cook.
