Testing Reg/rectifier

Post by Twidly »

Hi guys

as you may of gathered from the title im having a problem with the witchcraft that is electrics. basically i took my bike out for a little ride, all ran fine, brought it up and tucked it up for the night. The next morning i went to start it and nothing, no, crack, no ticking, its as dead as a dodo. so after doing a bit of looking on here vie gone around and checked the normal stuff, battery's charges, starter motor cable for corrosion no fuses blown. im now on the rectifier. i was just wondering how you go about checking if its puffed its last breath, there doesnt seem to be any charring on the cables so it might not even be this.

if any of you have any tips it would be very helpful

So what voltage is the battery at? and do the lights come on / horn make a noise? Is there a click of a starter relay when switched on and starter button pressed?

As Wicky says, what's the voltage at the battery terminals :?:
With the bike running and no lights on you should be getting somewhere between 13.5 and 15.5 volts.

You should here the solenoid clicking. I can hear that old AA advert going around in my head "dodgy solenoid) Something that's not been mentioned is the little diode in the fuse box, and what about the neutral switch. If the bike is in gear it wont start unless you dip the clutch.
