conked out in syle

Post by dusty1969 »

riding for 5 mile on country road loss of power and electrics.
reg rec connector melted.
30 amp fuse blown and starter solenoid fried to a state of no continuity when a new fuse fitted and tested with multimeter,
battery fried low voltage,
tested stator windings with multi meter as per cyber carls thread and they survived thakfully!!!
so i have ordered on flea bay
new yuasa ytx12-bs battery with warranty
new reg rec finned type with 1 year warranty
new solenoid starter relay

fingers crossed when they arrive in post and i fit them all should be cool and the gang??

the good thing about the bad day i had was 4 bikers stopped to offer assistance and the 5th biker was in a car he said wait ten minutes and came back with a motorbike trailer ,loaded the bike and gave me a lift the 5 miles back to my destination(as i am working away from home) gives you faith in the biking community, happy days, all my parts cost me approx £60.

As this has happened before - you might consider fitting a decent R/R ideally a Mosfet before it happens a third time...
It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

All parts cost £60 ?

Is it a fake Yuasa.. A genuine one is going to be over £40
Cheap Chinese reg/rec ? anything decent is going to be over £60
Probably fake warranty too.

If the parts are all genuine quality stuff can you let us all know where your getting them from.

malcopop has a fair point, be very careful of Chinese copies, or you could be back to square one.
if you have any doubts over the starter solenoid, I have a used Honda one you can have for the cost of postage

battery was £40, reg rec from motorcycle parts.uk £22 starter relay was £12.75 = £74.75 my approximation was £14.75 out it was a gestimate after a busy day?lol
i have to admit that the reg/rec and battery(that are fried) were off a breakers yard from 15 year old fire blade,
lessons learnt second hand parts are a roll of the dice and cheap copy imports are the same reading advice on this website??
i am hoping that this new part(reg rec)with cooling fins does the job,
the mosfet ones look the dogs dodaas but im on a budget and they are expensive i will take my chances,if it goes again then i will be the first to put my hands up to anyone withe the old i told you so chestnut ??
thank you all for the advice once again,

dusty196 that caused a lot of damage. Touch wood the rest of the electrics are all OK. Give it a good going over before you ride any distance. What a nice chap that was getting the trailer. You would never get the comradeship amongst car drivers unless they had an AA badge.
that would happen around London. bikers don't even nod to one another :(
That's because there are hardly any left...their all on scooters and don't speak the lingo. That's the one thing that is first noticeable when you get out of the big city's, people are friendlier, especially out in the countryside.
