Missing CCT cap

Post by Lancer »

Hi all, a question and a bit of advice if anyone can help,
I thought for a winter job I would replace the original ctt’s with some manual ones.
Followed the instructions as laid out in the forum ( brilliant - thank you ) just about finished putting all back together and a well deserved cuppa.
That is when I noticed the original cct’s were different, on closer inspection the metal cap off the rear one was missing ?
I haven’t run the bike yet but am left with the issue that it might have come off at some point and fallen down into the clutch area ?
Has anyone had this issue before ?
If I remove the clutch cover will it give me access to it if indeed it has come off and fallen down.
Any tips or advice would be appreciated
Dave.

Never heard of that before.

Quick check. On the CCT body there should be a painted dot. Check to see if the front & rear have the same colour.

It may be at some point they have been replaced & the cap wasn't swapped over.

Dots can be White, Pink or Orange it's just a batch marker...

To take the clutch cover off, You'll need to drain the Oil & the coolant. So you will need Fresh Oil, new coolant & a new gasket...
Making up since 2007, sometimes it's true...Honest...

Two different colour dots. The cap is missing off the rear one.
It came out easily when I removed it. I am positive nothing fell off when I removed it.

I have come across this before where the old metal caps have not been taken off the old CCT's and fitted to the new one's before fitting, as Mac points out.
IIRC the metal cap is a tight fit on the rubber end, so not very likely it would fall off when fitting the CCT to the rear cylinder, and no chance of it dropping off once the CCT is fixed in place.
I can understand you wanting to make sure there isn't a metal cap floating around in the engine somewhere for peace of mind, but I will be surprised if you find one.

I would imagine the rear CCT only was replaced at that time, hence the metal cap is not missing on the front CCT,

I agree, the current one was fitted without swapping the cap over.

You can check easily enough- look at the one you removed; if it has a circle imprinted on the rubber then it didn't have a cap fitted on assembly.
The circle is from the rear of the tensioner blade.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Thanks all for the input. I will fire her up over the Xmas and fingers crossed she won’t rattle or worse go bang.
Merry Christmas to everyone.

If there isn't any cap fitted to your new one you'll need to add it.
I'm sure one if our regulars will have a spare one if it's missing.

I have just fitted these so shouldn’t need a cap and that these will be ok

confession time!
I replaced the CCTs on my '05 VTR and, after reading about the 'fail-safe' mod on this forum, removed them to do the mod only to find I'd forgotten to swap the metal caps over from the old ones..Doh! The rubber was a bit deformed which made it difficult to get the caps on and also made the calculations a bit challenging as to how big to make the insert. A bit of trial and error and taking them out a couple of times all was well and the motor is still running fine. Only used for track days

IMHO Honda should have added a note about reusing the old end cap in with the new CCT, if they couldn’t stretch the budget to supply the part with a brand new end cap,
