MPG

Post by Rick54 »

I'm thinking of getting a Firestorm and would like to get a idea of what sort of MPG you people get, I did have a 03 955i Daytona but that has been written off along with a few bits of me !! I've just started riding again using my daughter's SV650 and love it, hence the need for a big twin. I like the look of the VTR and I've read all the reports I can get on it and nearly all say great bike but terrible MPG, is it really that bad. I ride 10K a year so this is a concern. Thanks in advance

Hiya mate ignore the reports it's a crackin bike. The fuel range may not be outstanding (about 100-110 miles) unless you cane it then down into the eighties but this is due to the size of the tank rather than consumption. Had mine pushing six years still don't know what to replace it with... 8) 8)

Before fitting filter and rejetting I used to fill up at 100 miles and put 13litres in which works out at 35mpg

Afterwards I now fill up at 125 miles and put the same 13litres in
This works out to 44mpg

As you can see this pays for itself very quickly

Take the reports with a pinch of salt -seems like someone once said the fuel range was crap and now all the journo's trot out the same tired crap.

If you read most road tests of sports bikes these days they all only get 100-130 miles on a tankfull yet it never gets mentioned.
Buy the bike, read this forum for suitable mods and enjoy the satisfaction of having bought a cracking bike (unless you get a yellow one -they're a bit common)

Thanks Lads sounds like I could live with that and fitting a VFR tank looks like a good idea. Cheers

Cheeky twot, that sounds like a challenge!!! :P

That mileage doesn't really change whether I ride like a loon or just tootle down the motorway at 95
Unless I'm on track when it drops right off -I hit rlod at 65 miles at the nurburgring doing (8:40 laps)

The most I've done was 153 miles to cut out dry.
The first 125 miles were a usual sunday razz about, then the last 30 were being more and more gentle until it died as I coasted into the petrol station
Still only got 15.3 litres in it though!! :?

Just like to mentioned something that I feel not everyone takes into account.

Many people here (inc myself) have changed their sprockets (smaller front/bigger back) and unless they use some device such as Speedo Healer (Which I've just fitted last night to my bike)

It will appear that you are doing more miles to a tank than you really are.

Could be as much as 20% in error.

Not sure if everyone is allowing for that on their modded bikes.

I went for this one (has always been recommended as the best)

http://www.speedohealer.com/eng/intro.htm

An absolute Doddle to fit :)

Behind the tank in the clear plastic housing (where all the connectors are) you just pull apart the pink/black/green one, and fit the SpeedoHealer connectors onto either end, and job done!!!!

Use the web sites calculator to program it, and it's done.

Really REALLY simple. I've not bothered to run the special button to the front end (shows your top speed whilst the bikes not moving).

I just ran the one cable along the side frame with a few cable ties and stuck the speedo healer into the back on the recess under the seat.

VERY recommended.
