I must admit to being a bit puzzled by this whole thing............

When I 1st started looking into getting a Firestorm (reading about them)

I thought Honda made the Firestorm, then changed/upgraded the model into the SP1 then onto the latest SP2

But then found out no.

The Firestorm was made (and pretty much ignored - with a tweak in 2001/2002) And the SP models kinda came out along side it.

Dunno if this was the best idea or not?

I know they have a different swing arm, lower bars and tweaked suspension.
What else is the difference?

And should they have just made the SP models the replacement for the Storms?

I bought my Firestorm new, had it for four years, then bought an SP1.

Apart from the fact that they are both hondas and both 1000cc V twins theres not much thats the same.

I like the SP better, but thats just my view. From a practical "riding on the road" point of view, there's not much you can do on the SP that the Storm won't do.

The Storm is a more practical every day machine. Its more tractable and perhaps more comfortable (particularly if you raise the bars a little).

The SP is a bit quicker, handles a bit better and is more "track biased". Its an absoulte bugger to ride in town because it really likes to be under load all the time and when its not it burps, bucks and is a general pain in the butt to ride. But for me its more rewarding to ride.

[I'll probably get excommunicated now]

Virtually everything. Completely different engine too.
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Ime only looking to buy this sp2 its only been on the road two months and the owner sold it as he didnt like it,,i havnt ridden it but i did have a lot of fun on a mates 98 storm the idiot sold it ,,i had a duke 916 at the time and enjoyd the storm as much as the 916,,

This sp2 is the black one last off the line and its cheap too,,i just wish i cud make up my mind ,ive had the zx9r since new 2000 and clocked up 37,000 miles ,but ime itching for another v twin....

Thing is this is a lot of bike for the money,,but i remember reports about them being snatchy round town (if you want snatchy ride a 916 slowly) so ime used to that ...

Think you'll find a lot of the snatchiness was ironed out with the SP-2 from the SP-1. I rode one once - thought it was fantastic although a very focused riding position etc - if I was doing much town work I think I'd buy something else.

Pain in the butt fuel range as well.

Sounds great and goes well - was WSB winner x 2 after all!

SP2 999 cc, fuel injected
VTR 996 cc, carburated

They really are different, that's why you can't just bolt the fuel injection on etc.

I believe the cams are gear driven on the SP as well, but I wouldn't swear to it?

yes you are correct about the cams being gear driven, the bore and stroke is different, the sp1/2 having bigger pistons and a shorter stroke
