budd wrote:people with little dogs !!! now I've nothing against little dogs it's the owners, I've just nearly had a punch up with some guy who accused my dog of attacking his. I accept my dog is pretty big, and he does run up to people if I don't get hold of him, but all he wants to do is sniff at the other dog see below this is him 6 months ago, he's 18 months old now so essencially still a pup.

What annoys me is people screaming and shouting at me that my dog is killing theirs while it's patently obvious that’s not the case, if my dog (Griff) properly attacked say a spaniel I agree he could do a lot of damage, but the owners (including this guy tonight) don’t seem to realise the absence of any injury to their dog suggests it hasn’t actuallybeen attacked, merely sniffed at.

Rant over I need a drink

I know what your saying bud but try and see it from the other dog owners perspective,

owning a small dog my self its an butt clenching moment when some guys big dog come running over to mine, it only takes mine to get scared and 'fight or flight' and if it fights in panic it could very well make a bigger dog react badly and attack my dog

when i had dogs that would run at other peoples dog, when i spotted other peoples dogs i shouted mine back and put it on the lead until passed

My dad had to kick some wombles lassie type dog when it bit our Manchester terrier which was on her lead some years back that could have been avoided had the owner of his dog kept his on a wombles lead until we had passed

I hear you Bud. I'm a fan of bigger dogs myself, not that I would call your dog big. Had close relationships with a rotti's and mastiffs in the past and they all get a bad rep from the few bad owners and media coverage. Too me the size of the dog is irrelevant and TBH the yappy little ones are the worst culprits for starting trouble. You have to appreciate that people get paranoid now because of the press.

Personally I would quite happily walk up to any dog to say hello and give a stroke whether that be a pitbull or poodle I judge a dog on it's behaviour/body language rather than size or appearance. In fact I would most likely get down on all fours, wag my elbow in the air and get them to play  The thing is I get on better with dogs than I do most people. Got my friends Tibetan terrier here with me at the moment for the weekend while they are away. He's currently sleeping between my feet, all snuggled up sleeping on his back and snoring away.

Problems tend to arise when one dog is on a lead and another is not. Best to meet on neutral territory and both be either on the lead or off. Never one or the other on the lead. Preferably both off.

Beautiful looking dog you have there by the way

coments well received, and your right he's not a massive dog but at nearly 50kg he's definitely large (the pic was taken 6 months ago when he was 1 yr old he’s a bit bigger now) but he is bigger than most dogs he meets and that seems a problem for a lot of owners.

I do try to watch out for other dogs and get him on a lead if I see any I don't know because I fully accept having a big dog bounding towards you could be cause for concern , but a dog needs exercise and no matter how vigilant I am there are bound to be occasions he’ll be off his lead and encounter other dogs, it's the often disproportionate reaction that is starting to annoy me.

Tonight when I was down the fields it was pitch black and dogs having better senses than us humans he spots these 2 spaniels that I didn't know were there and goes tearing off to have look, the guy with the spaniels shouts at him and he come running back to me. When our paths cross on the field track the guy goes absolutely ape sh1t screaming and shouting that my dog had attacked his, when I walked up to him he drew his hand back as if squaring up to throw a punch he was that wound up.

I did point out that if his dogs had been as savagely attacked or mauled as he alleged then they would be injured and not standing there wagging their tails, this comment was met by more abuse along the lines of f**king dangerous dog should be muzzled, put down etc etc at this point I ;politely (well perhaps not to politely) told him to f**k off out of my sight as I was in danger of losing my temper.

I do understand peoples fears of dogs and I know big dogs do attack other dogs or indeed people but if I believed my dog was truly dangerous I would have him muzzled and constantly on a lead and TBH if he was like that I wouldn’t want him around my two kids (5 & 8 yr old) people should realise that dogs are very good at sorting out a hierarchy amongst themselves.

I know this is easy for me to say having the bigger dog but in truth for your average dog having a bit of a sniff a run round the field maybe a bit of a shout they soon establish a pecking ordering and all is well, thay can then get on with what dogs do running about enjoying themselves.
In my opinion owners can project their fears on to their animals, overreact with other dogs and stop dogs being dogs, unless you’re dealing dogs trained to fight dogs very rarely hurt each other, people forget dogs are pretty tough things, even the small ones which as was mentioned can be the feistiest of all.
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

Find a Haggis to ride. :biggrin

Some people don't deserve dogs especially if they are thick enough to be sucked in by the media bollox. Actually those kind of people should be put on a dangerous people act and put down. It's only because of the breed you have. If you had a giant poodle (the type mixed into labradoodles) peoples reactions would be different even though giant poodles can be very aggressive dogs, especially towards other dogs.

I don't mind any dogs running around as it's good for them as long as they obey there master .
It's the out of control ones big or small that pizz me off .
And yes my man dog has been attacked by other dogs but a swift kick to the aggressor (owner or dog ) sorts it out .
