Is there a way of checking it's not 180 out without running it or stripping the heads? I had a bit of a faff with mine, set all the timing based on the workshop manual and what I've read on here, but the crank has gone round without any camshafts in, so it's 50/50 I suppose. I'd have kept count if I knew what 180 out was but it's one of those things I've seen mentioned and never looked in to.
It's a simple fix if it's out and only takes 10 minutes to sort on a loose engine .
Set your fly wheel to rt and look down the plug hole to see if the piston is at tdc then fix the rear head cams ri and re so that the ri/re are facing the outside and the cams are pointing up and in .
Fit the cam chain and tensioner and move onto the front cylinder .
If your cams are not fitted on the front cylinder hold the cam chain up so it don't fall in .
Now rotate the crank 1&1/4 anticlockwise till FT lines up in the window .
The front cams face away from each other the markings on them are FE and FI follow the same procedure as the rear and all should be good

Yep, if the timing is messed that bad to begin with, remove cams from both cylinders so valves don't get jammed while turning the crank over. Make sure the chains are pulled taught as you turn the crank and start at compression stroke on either the front cylinder or the rear cylinder.
STARTING FROM TDC compression stroke on the
REAR CYLINDER and
MOVING TO TDC compression stroke on the
FRONT it's 1.1/4 turn (450°) anti-clockwise at the crank.
STARTING FROM TDC compression stroke on the
FRONT CYLINDER and
MOVING TO TDC compression stroke on the
REAR it's only 3/4 turn (270°) anti-clockwise at the crank.

Aha, that's the trick I was after
Cheers Carl, I saw you post that elsewhere and it's the method I used, just finding the true TDC was the step I missed. It will still be easy to check at this stage so I will have a look, cheers guys!

Indicator fault, sorted (see other thread)
carb problem sorted (hopefully) (see other thread)
modified chain guard/hugger and gave it a good clean

All is well :-)
RT, cams up and in, piston at the top. From that position I set the front the way described above. Saved a bit of effort anyway. Thanks for the tips guys.

Stopper modded the CCT's today. previous owner told me he had the cct's changed 2 years ago when he bought it from a main Honda dealer (as a precautionary measure), when I took them out, No metal covers and dents in the rubber. top mechanics these main dealer guys, not swapping the covers over

Luckily I had 2 covers from when I fitted manuals to a customers bike last year, had to refit the tensioners then rotate the engine a few times to set the tensioners then lock them off again, just made the job take a little longer, all done now.
tomorrow clean the carbs that stink of old fuel. when I took them off the little rubber boot by the front carb choke plunger was off and the plunger pulled all the way out, this was with choke off. so the previous owners friendly mechanic wasn't as good as he thought he was, this was the same guy that cleaned the carbs because crap went through from the tank when doing an air filter change, but didn't clean the tank
The spark plugs

rear one black, front one black and really sooty, hoping that's been caused by the choke being on, well it would explain the front one, maybe the rear was slightly on too.
I feel on a mission now to give this bike some of the love it deserves, it might be mega low mileages but just goes to show how things can be wrong when you'd think it would be like new, all this down to people not knowing what they're doing or taking the time to do the job right.
Next up will be prepping for a bit of paintwork on the forks and subframe, they aren't bad and perfectly usable but going to do it anyway.
Oh and hoping my gipro gear indicator I won on ebay arrives by the weekend so I can plug it in

very productive day today, I've been tinkering with starter motors, I have two that were worse for wear, then greeneyedgecko aka Christine very kindly sent me here old starter motor, completely free of charge, thankyou again Christine....
so I set about making one good starter from the three, I found that two of the three main cylinders had minor damage on the inside, just below the hole that the main bolt passes thru.
other had the odd perished seal, I even had to cut the two long bolts off of Christine's starter as they had seized on....
with the help of carl I managed to figure out an easy way of getting all the magnets in place, what a tricky job until carl showed me.
the proof will be in the pudding, I plan on putting this starter on my bike and then checking out the condition of the starter that comes off.
sadly I have no before pictures, just the finished starter.
