I actually made my parts list to get the bike ready for summer....
The biggest item will be new springs all around..... no more fat boy....lol
It is to the point where it is almost like riding a track bike
Besides that just some minor stuff but I am going to replace the choke cable assembly.
Not that it is broken or anything (yes the plastic nuts are still fine after being removed more times than I would want to think about...lol) but there is no more friction to keep it pulled out and I would think the needle ends to be a bit worn by now.
Other than a new set of plugs and some carb tweaking for the Akro system and she is as good as ever

Nice one Hawk
I imagine I will go back to a spacer of some thickness or another so will bear this in mind.

Thought when I started reading that you were going to order a engine refresh kit .

Just to prove I still wield the spanners today I finally got the front sprocket off, using the method I was advised on this forum ie the piece of 2 x 2 through the rear wheel locked up on the swing arm. Also used same method to undo the rear sprocket nut - very tight !!!!!
Also took the opportunity of cleaning up under and around the front sprocket cover - very messy !!!!
So just waiting for the new chain and sprocket set, I bought at Manchester bike show, to arrive.
However I am a bit worried about how close the exhaust pipe is to the suspension - in fact it is touching - picture below
It looks like the header has been welded at some time - picture below
And there is also a bed in the pipe to the left hand exhaust - see below
While I have it in this many bits I intend to check out all the rear suspension, so it looks like I need to get those headers off - anyone any ideas, other than my theory about a poorly welded header as to why pipe is so close to suspension.

Just to add to that previous post - there is no clamp on the header to the rear cylinder

You wont 'need' to take the headers off to remove the rear suspension & swingarm. The end cans will have to come off but that's just to make access easier.
Yes that has been welded...by Ray Charles by the look of it...
If it's been off & welded it may not be sitting in the quite the right place hence the clearance issue. But before you go ripping it all apart try it with the rear wheel back in & the bike on the floor sitting normally. As you have it in bits it's either on a stand or suspended so It wont have the rear end compressed as normal.
If you have to take the headers off...plenty of release agent...WD/GT85/Plusgas...However you might find it better to use a nut splitter/dremmell to get the nuts off...Last thing you need is to snap a stud off...very easy to do esp the fronts...

The bed in the pipe on the last pic is normal. That is there for chain clearance. Get a clamo and fit properly and all should be good Clearances are very close down there but nothing should touch.

Hello Carl
At the moment its actually on a rear paddock stand, so I'm guessing is compressed. As you say the welding is crap and may have distorted the pipe, hence no clearance. I think I'll deffo use the dremmel and nut splitter, then run a die down the existing studs. I'm going to suspend it some other way when I do suspension.
All the exhaust sealing rings are knackered as well
Its probably looking like i'll need some second hand headers - such is life. Then when I get all that lot done I'll get onto the manual cct s
But I'm getting there - had bike on SORN since I bought it, it will be 15 years old in May so will qualify for classic insurance on my policy
Thanks for your input as per usual

I'd probably look at greasing those suspension linkages while your at it. They can be a bit of a nuisance if they seize.

Thanks Chris. Painted they are. Got them from Duffy in time for my MOT as the front was a bit dodgy after the Taxi incident.
