When i was trying to start mine from cold i'd turn it over without the choke, then open the choke about 3/4 and hit the starter again, that would normally have it going first time.

Use some redex before your long jaunt to help clean crud out the fuel system, I did that to mine and its perfick now.

Careful with the Redex, someone on here did a lot of damage (SP I think) using that.
Search the older posts for details.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
