Yes, the heat guns are better than a blowtorch as long as you don't forget that they're designed to strip paint off....put a shield round anything you don't want to get the paint stripped off of.

slightly off topic but i think i tried every trick in the book the other night to remove a stubborn bolt on the to cam pully on mg diesel engine, started off with bloody big bars then air impact driver then the hit the bugger with a hammer impact driver, then back to the big bar using pipe freeze to freeze the bolt in the hope it might sheer off, then the blow torch, all of the above failed miserably in the end i had to resort to the drill and hammer and chisel, all in all 3 hours to remove a bolt thats not been out in 7 years and was only supposed to be at 15ft/lbs of torque anyway. so yeah them inspection covers being made of plasticine dont really stand a chance do they.
