Not on mine I just un plug the cable tied plug in about 2 seconds!

Does an optimate charger also have to be connected to an AC supply while it's on the bike?

A Hyperion Power Module (HPM) will suffice...

Yes I think it does, if you don't have it plugged into the mains it will drain the battery if left attached too long
