Cheers! I just twigged that CCT was probably cam chain tensioners! It was fitted with new CCTs about 1000 miles ago. Should i still aim to replace these with the manual ones you suggest, or have I got a few years use out of the automatic ones?

hello mate and welcome im quite new as well and on a vtr as first bike i was looking for a cbr or a bandit on friends advice as well but fell in love with my vtr i did the same as you got divorced and said ive wanted a bike for 30yr so did it last year enjoy it mate its great and the guys on here are a wealth of knowledge and very helpfull

its your shout buddy, i'd love to say you will be fine but you just never know, you do hear a few horrer stories. you would perhaps be better off doing the stopper mod, which means you still use original cct's. have a word with bazza or tony mon, they know alot more than me....

Replace or do the mod.....
I bought mine with standard CCt`s and after reading the horror stories on here about them letting go at random........
The first ride after fitting manuals was like a weight lifted of my shoulders......once you know what can happen any unusual noise gets your pucker going and you can`t enjoy the ride.
Relatively cheap and easy to do but well worth the peace of mind.
Just my humble opinion.....but you did ask.

The spring will fail, especially the front one.
too many peeps have joined this forum with a failed one as their first post.

It's just a matter of when it happens.

Some of them seem to last for years, others fail within months.

Before you ask, the stopper mod just means that when it fails, the plunger can't retract far enough to allow the cam chain to jump cam sprocket teeth, leading to bent valves.

A manual one just fixes the plunger to a set position, and although it will need a very occasional adjustment it's foolproof.

I'm in South Somerset and go to the Hunter Lodge bike night in the summer. Hopefully we should bump into each other there, Firestorms do stand out from the run of the mill bikes you normally get.

hello, as ive mentioned before in another thread my bike has only done just under 13,000 miles and i think is on its 3rd front auto. all being well they are getting changed at easter for peace of mind.
