That will be the triangular sponge filters from the corners of the airbox. They have deteriorated and got sucked into the carbs. And no there are no in line fuel filters. Well done  looks like you have found the problem. Get some carb cleaning spray give all the orifices and jets a clean through. With the mixture screws, you should count the turns in clockwise (do not overtighten) then remove them making sure the tiny springs and rubber O ring come out with them. Blast carb cleaner through there, you should see it squirt out the hole in the wall of the main chamber by the butterfly flap. And be careful putting the springs and diaphragm back together. Don't pinch it when putting back together.

A couple of tips for you. Take you time work methodically on one carb at a time as there are differences with jet size etc. when putting the diaphragms back together. Smear a little grease in the channels around the outskirts to hold the edge of the diaphragm in place. And the very long spring you can push down into the diaphragm lid and hold with your finger so it don't spring out, hold it as close to the hole in the rear of the diaphragm slide and release the spring and place the cap in situ. Once you have put the three screws back in to secure it. Just slide the slide back and make sure it slides back smoothly. You should hear the vacuum suction.

Well done.

Oh, and re-set your mixture screws before putting the carbs back on.

Hmmmm, I don't seem to have any triangular sponges inside my airbox anymore. I take it they should be in the black triangular blocks either end of the air box? Is there a reason why these could have been removed or have they just disappeared through the carbs?

Will get some ordered tomorrow.

not good that they are missing, but you could cut them out of an old foam air filter if you needed. do any of your mates have dirtbikes? they will have a left over filter you can chop up

No, by the sounds of it that's what all that sandy colour bits are inside your carbs. Disintegrated! If your are running an aftermarket filter like a K&N you won't need them anyway as K&N filters come with rubber blocks that go in it's place and block those inlets off for some reason. Don't know why or what effect that has. Those corner inlets lead down into the diaphragm of the carbs.

Yes I do have a K&N fitted with the blocks. So I don't need the foam filters? Is there a filter in the fuel tank?

As far as I know, not inside, but I believe there is a gauze type filter where the fuel tap attaches. You could get some cheap inline fuel filters and put them on the fuel lines if you wanted. Some people have done that and it wouldn't harm. Just something else to change at service intervals.

The filter leads up from where the fuel tap connects

Its about 8cm long i think, have one knocking about somewhere, they are a bitch to get in and out mind.

It is indeed a fine gauze type, but if a tank is shitty inside this is not enough to stop rust or corrosion etc getting through,

i also fitted two in-line fuel filters and these soon foul up as this second hand tank is so poor!

I think I will go for a couple of inline filters. What is the best way to attach them to the hose small jubilee clips?

Is it worth draining the tank as it is off and looking inside? Can they be flushed or cleaned? If so what with?

At least there is light at the end of the tunnel, just need a bit of sun

Yes, you do need the foam filters.
The blocks merely seal the top of the chamber.
The air flows into and out of the chamber via the foam, and so they're still needed with a K&N or any other aftermarket filter.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I stand corrected then  Doesn't make sense to me though. The blocks sit in the gap where the foam filter normally sits, blocking any airflow through that passageway. :confused

Carl,
The blocks do a similar job to the mouldings on the bottom of the Honda filter. The air comes in from below the housing and through the little triangle then back down the tubes to the carb tops.....if I remember correctly.

We can have a look on Saturday....and if there's time we can take the air box off as well

I've never had or seen in the flesh a Honda filter. But what your saying seems logical. I will have my airbox off quicker than you can say Pet shop boys  or is that aquarium supplies boys
