cheers for all the messages unfortunately i started the bike yesterday to find a nasty metallic rattle on idle gonna strip it today and investigate further.
There a few small jobs i want to get done on the bike over winter. wheel colour change, new brakes as they badly worn tidy rear peg mounts up and fix slight blow on the exhaust and now sort this horrible noise out

Oh, no, it looks like another new owner's been bitten by a failing CCT.
Best not start it until you've checked the front CCT- that's the usual culprit.
Have a look at the various CCT threads in Workshop, and shout if you need any help.

Make sure you don't follow the instructions in the Haynes manual for setting the timing as it has detrimental flaws in it. If you follow the instructions here
http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=8326 you should have no problems. Have a read through and make sure everything is clear to you and if you have any questions or are confused then ask.
