ABBA stand or get a step ladder to hoist the front end up - though you'll also need a rear paddock stand.

Front stand though you might need to use a 17mm socket as a lift pin.

From your description with the PO bodges it will need a good fettling to get it safe and roadworthy . Here's the downloadable & searchable PDF Honda VTR Service Manual > http://www.vtr1000.org/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 31&t=18025

Yes, re the PO bodges.

I enjoy doing re builds though, so I kind of bought it with the intention of doing a strip down. Think I paid slightly too much, but not enough to make me regret buying it.

What the smeg is going on with that choke cable? It looks like the right end on it according to wemoto, but doesn't want to push back in, does it just need completely re routing?

(please note wheelie bins in the rear as requested! :Ball Kick:

Looks like the placcy bolt has broken is missing that keeps the choke cable fixed on the bracket.

Second-hand choke cables are on fleabay - though it means getting underneath the tank, & airbox and dislodging the carbs to fit them to front & rear carb ( a good time to fit manual CCTs and a front cylinder vacuum takeoff for carb balancing). Beware there's another two placcy nuts prone to breaking at the carb end of the choke system - a nice chap here gsl_s_r makes some very nice brass replacements.

Download and search for 'choke' in the PDF manual I linked to earlier et viola:

Just used some big fat cable ties that will hold it in place

The plastic nut is all present and correct behind the rubber gromit, it looks like it will attach to the bracket fine, but the cable will not push back into the bike. This is why I am wondering if it needs rerouting somehow at the other end, so it has less slack and will push back?

Good that the /fixing adjuster bolt is still there.

You'll need to lift the tank and remove airbox to see what's going on at the carb end...

There should be a 2nd plastic nut, a proper hex nut that tightens it to the bracket, not just the one under the grommet which is there to add friction on to the choke plunger.

It looks like the splitter box where the single cable is branched into 2 cables is not in the correct place, it should be over to the right hand side of the engine, In the v under the coolant expansion bottle

Ok, thanks guys, I need to take the tank and airbox off anyway soon to give it a general check over. Not going to be on it much till I am happy it's all ok.

Thanks for the manual too, thats very useful!

Yeh your missing the plastic nut that goe behind the rubber front bit with the smaller nut. That smaller rubber but with nut goes in front of the bracket and the missing bigger nut tightens up along the thread behind the bracket. The two rubber bits and the plastic sheath you see further back are supposed to sit under a coolant hose. In reality it sits further back. It's a tight fit under the hose hence it being tight to push back, and the plastic sheathing is there to protect it against the hot hoses You should be able to push it back without removing anything but the cable is broken as there is no nut. Best to get a replacement.

Image
On the right hand side by the plastic diaphragm cap Click on pic for full view) at the bottom you can just see the choke cable, it runs around up and around the cap which AMCQ is on about. It then runs along the rear of the rear side (in pic) of carbs where it joins up with the one coming from the front carb, You can see the coolant hose I am talking about by the CCT. The cable runs under this and out onto the frame. If you look carefully by the jubilee clip on that hose you can just see the plastic nut that you are missing.
