I also wanted clarity on this subject so I asked clarification on 2 statements. I have it now printed out & stuck to the wall. Thanks again Cybercarl

Just to clarify the above to check valve clearances. Are the 2 statements below correct

For the front cylinder TDC on compression. The lobes will be pointing upwards & away from each other. The FT mark will be aligned in the timing orifice. The FE & FI marks will be flush with the cylinder head top opposed & on the outer edge of the cylinder head.

For the rear cylinder TDC on compression. The lobes will be pointing upwards & towards each other. The RT mark will be aligned in the timing orifice. The RE & RI marks will be flush with the cylinder head top opposed & on the outer edge of the cylinder head.

Once the above statements are achieved both the Inlet & exhaust valve clearances can be checked. Is this the same point at which the 7mm play in the cam chain can be verified as well?

Yes that is all correct, You got it spot on. And just to add to that, take the spark plugs out as it takes a bit of compression out of the cylinder so it's easier to turn and only turn the engine over at the crank in an anticlockwise direction. If you miss the mark then continue around again until it all lines up and cam lobes pointing in the right direction.

i have a rear cylinder head on its way, my pal is going to grind them into my head, the marks on the piston head are very minimal so il give it a go for 55 quid its got to be worth a try

ive got to tell you all im starting to enjoy this and thats only because of all the support im getting, im no mechanic but always been able to fix cars etc
my plan is to strip it down and get it back to a better condition but only when shes running ok
