Yes that is on my list of things to do. I would love a complete shock unit, Ohlins or something with separate preload and rebound controls, but that's me dreaming or waiting a very long time. So I think I will end up just changing the spring to a weight related linear spring. I just need to figure out how. I have spring compressors.

Why not have Jamie Daugherty set you up with a reworked F4i shock? Less money, and a hell of a lot better than stock... I'd say from what I have tried, it's well on par with an Ohlins...

Yeh that is an option. I'm well aware of his reputation and quality of his shocks. I may have a word with him at a later date. I need to consider the extra on postage and custom charges as well though. To start with I will most likely go the cheap route and just chuck a new spring in to begin with. One small step for mankind and all that.

The problem is I want this and I want that. I need to start prioritising what's more important and comes first and then sometimes things come along that can't be turned down and get in the the way and change the priority of things Also if I'm not careful I will end up with OCMD

I put off doing the forks for a long time. I wish I had done them sooner now as they have transformed the feel of the bike, especially with all the potholes. even just changing the fork oil will improve things. If Mac holds a workshop day they could be done then easily enough. Either just the oil change with a slightly heavier oil or new springs as well.

Well, spring comressors makes no difference, the stock shock isn't meant to be rebuildable, so it takes the ability to reload the gas to dismantle it really... Or, at the very least a hydraulic press and some fiddling...

Mmm that puts that bright idea out the window then. What you say makes perfect sense because when I last had the shock off I was looking for a way to dismantle it. I was hoping there would be an end cap or something I could remove, take the spring off and slip a new one on. I could not find any straight forward way. It appears to be an all in one sealed unit. maybe it has wicky's R/R sh1t stamped on it somewhere. So basically there is no point in buying a spring for it, as by the time I get someone to fit it, the price will be up with me better off just buying a cheap Hagon or similar complete unit as a replacement. I shall probably just live with it for another year or so.

Another issue is the stock spring is a "beehive" shape as it is smaller at the top than the bottom.

So you will either need to make a collar for the top or find a similarly wound spring

The standard Firestorm rear shock spring is removable, how do you think I fitted my Maxton spring

Also as mentioned, the linear Maxton spring comes with a collar. That removes the problem of the standard spring having different diameters at either end.

This is what mine looks like, not mine by the way in the picture.

I like that, is that collar made of plastic though and do they give any options with spring colour? I have just been to the Maxton site and what a nightmare to navigate how to put of customers! force them to make enquiries instead of being able to browse
