Main question here is......should i get the cct's checked out when it goes in for a service?
Sounds like a good idea if your not too sure kaz.......but my only worry is if you ask a guy if he thinks you should spend more money in his shop normally he's quite happy to say yes 8O
Alternatively do you know any other Storms nearby you could listen to as a comparrison or anyone who could have a listen to yours if you're not too sure?

I had the front go on mine, but I didn't notice any noises prior. Does the tensioner take time to back out once the spring breaks? The spring doesn't break over time. It's either broken or not. It figures the front one has to go. What a pain to get at. The rear would be so much easier!

Front went a second time. Joy. Ordering the APE's today.

I don't know if you can really check them out ahead of time. They're either broke or they're not. It's a torsion spring that breaks that causes the CCT to back out of position. Both times for me, there were no warning signs. Just riding along and suddenly...... CLACKCLACKCLACKCLACKCLACKCLACK.

Cam change tensioners advise required

Post by Geoff »

Guys

How can you tell when they go? Do they start sa a small rattle noise or can you hear them straight away as a clanking sound? Getting confused as to what you should be listening for.....starting to worry about the least little noise the bike makes now!

Thanks for your help.

Hi Geoff,

As far as any warning signs go, it seems some of us get them, and some of us don't. I had the front go twice with no warning signs. I supposed if the tensioner backs out slowly after the spring breaks, there would be some sort of noise. I've had ticking in my engine before and have pulled both tensioners only to find they were okay. Buy the aftermarket ones if you're worried. The $100 is worth the peace of mind. I was the same way though.. every little noise would cause paranoia! Screw that. Get rid of 'em.

Scott,
What kind of CCT did you have ?

honda 14520-mbb-013, 14520-mbb-003 ?
Pink, orange, white dot on the CCTs ?

How could you order APE CCT's ?

I've checked, my rear CCT is "pink". (2001 Model)

I believe mine are the white ones. I have a 1998 model.

Actually, I haven't ordered the APES yet.. My bike is in desperate need of tires first, and it's been a low $$$ summer. :(

Hey lads
Just got my front done, went with absolutely no warning and seized, bending the exhaust valves...not much fun. There is a cheap and easy fix, put a bolt into the back of the cct which sit inside the tensioner spring, use the lock nut to hold the position, the bolt is the same as that of the drice chain tensioner on a mx bike. this is what the mech did for my bike after they learnt the hard way on their race vtr bike. the bolt is a few dollars, if the spring fails al that happens is that it gets a little rattly but not the catastophic fail as all the tension goes.
btw grat to be back on the bike today!!! been 3 weeks
