Random shut down?

I had a similar issue yesterday only with loss of power instead of surging cruising along the motorway. I'd filled up to the brim about 15 miles before it happened (standard unleaded rather than the high octane stuff the previous owner said he always used, this was the first time I'd filled it). It still idled fine and the issue disappeared after I stopped for 5 mins, possibly even before that after I'd idled at the lights for a minute. I've received some advice in another thread, but over-filling the tank seems like as good a theory as any right now.

Incidentally, mine's a 1998 model and I filled up as soon as the reserve light started coming on. I only managed to get 12.7 litres in, so I guess 3.3 litres or so of the 16 litre capacity must be in reserve.

Have definitely caught the VTR bug having cycled everywhere for 10 years... And being the environmentally concerned type was fully intending to cycle into central London today for the "people's climate march". But Box Hill seems to have developed strangely magnetic qualities and the urge to guzzle some gas may be too strong.

Looks like ive found the issue. Sprayed brake clean into the vent hole on the cap. None came out anywhere. Is blocked.

Now you just have to unblock it...Air line ?

Will give it 120psi up its butt tomorrow at work.

Don't forget your safety goggles...

Just think if it goes wrong you could end up with a horribly deformed but bigger capacity tank...

I didnt think of that. But the compressor is upstairs so was planning on removing the cap to get it there.

Don't waste your time on higher octane there's no point unless your running high comps. These engine don't need higher octane.

Well that didnt work. Vent is clear.

Shut down only at a crusing 60mph.

It does it at no other time.

It will do power runs up to 100mph no worries.

A while back to make getting the airbox on and off easier I removed the carb vents that go into the airbox and put some fine mesh over them. I wonder if this could be the cause?

Was a ripped diaphragm. Have cut it out and have a new kit on order.

Turns out you dont need to cut the diaphragm, just take the spring out.

Sorry to resurrect this post, but I think this has happened to me, two days running my bike has conked out, first time I managed to get it started again & limp it home at about 30/40 mph but the 2nd time I couldn't get it started again (mainly due to flattening the battery)
First time it happened at dual carriageway speed, fair shat meself at that one, second as I picked up speed to about 50 mph on a country lane, was quicker in pulling in the clutch that time.

Is it likely to be the fuel diaphragm & where do I find it? In the fuel tap? Is it easily replaceable? & do I have to replace the whole tap (assuming here) or just the diaphragm?

Find someone with a hearing aid. They come with very thin semi-rigid plastic wire to poke the goo out of hearing aid tubes.

Which tube am I poking with a sharp stick? And I have a decent plunger pump that puts out a hefty portion of air, is that worth a try?

Yes thats the bits you need the large black disc is the offending item...

Note where all the pipes go before you disconect any as they must go back the same way...Take some pics for refrence.


Take the tank off, after you have syphoned the bulk of the fule out. The petcock sits at the rear of the tank. The diaphramgh sits under a plate held on with 4 screws...

So take that off. Inspect the diaphramph before you pull it off just in case it's not the culprit ! It may have an obvious tear or hole or it may be just torn at the very edge...

Thank you Mac. It might not be that after all, the battery appears to be dead, not sure if that is the single culprit, but the engine is not turning over quickly enough to start it. May be a combination of those two & the r/r as I'm having a real unlucky streak at the moment
