On the topic of dirty pistons...can these be refurbished or do they need to be replaced?
Say for example they had some light pitting or a build up of gunk on them - can these be very lightly sanded and then polished off?

As long as the pitting isn't too deep - yes some fine wet&dry and polish but if heavily pitted then like pitted forks seals will have a problem making an effective seal.
