Riding on ones own to get from A to B with a purpose in mind like commuting is OK but for pleasure it's not as fun. You should have dragged Lloyd out for a ride on his new Black sheep. :biggrin

My F###ing Firestorm, wishing I'd never bought another one now :(
I really can't be arsed with messing about with it all the time.

Last week I checked my Penske rear shock settings, the bike rode ok but was a bit wallowy after bumps in a straight line but handled ok, found the back end to be very soft and a clunk noise when pushing down, I took the shock off, removed the spring and found nothing untoward, put it back on bike and still clonking, messed about with it and repositioned the spring and no more clonk. This evening I rode it, I'd added some rebound and compression as well as shortening it a bit as the linkage was (still is a bit) hitting the exhaust, set sag the same as a standard one at 7mm (less than Ideal but it was soft). straight away it felt harsh, not confident, tipping in then running wide, backed off compression to what it was before and it felt better but could still slightly wallow, I added a couple of clicks of rebound to help this.. At a stop I was leaning over the bike looking at the shock and noticed on the initial stroke the shaft goes sideways :confused Rode it back and it was odd, It was still softish static but felt hard on the road, tagged with some fast riders and thought lets give em a go, woah it was all over the place and like a jack hammer, it was throwing me around the hole bike was bucking, I just waved them through and slowed down.... My Penske is buggered, done less than 1000 miles since a rebuild but that was a couple of years ago, in fact it never felt great on the old bike but I'd put that down to wrong spring... The standard shock is crap I don't want to put it back on, I just want to ride the way I want and the Storms not doing it.. Think I'm just going to park it up and go back to my VFR, That just does what it does and gets on with it, even if it's hardly cutting edge, I'll just ride on my own...
Also my fingers hurt from having to pull the front brake so hard to get it to work, nothing wrong with them, just not good enough.
I don't want spend any more money on this bike, it's cost enough.
Right now I feel like selling it :( 7400 miles, very close to mint condition, some tasty extra's, standard rear shock !, PM if interested.

Maybe I'll feel different in a couple of days, but right I'm a little bit pee'd off with it, had you guessed

sorry to hear this news malc, but seen as you've put all the effort into it, would it not be worth biting the bullet and getting the shock fixed, or a new shock. sounds like that's the only thing that's causing a problem, would it have anything to do with the shock spring combo?
you've got a really clean bike and it would be a real shame to sell it.....

elbow!
Do you think another shock rebuild is on the cards. If so, is it something you can do yourself?

just my POV, but if you don't finish it, your money and effort will be wasted. At least you have good service on Penske through Mr Ditchfield.

Well let's see..... first damn doctors...... I am starting to think they are trying to kill me....
Found out I have a either a abscess or massive infection from the surgery which they somehow didn't find for the last 7-8 months that I have been having issues..... well I gave up on them a few months back as the started treating me like I was just showing up at the ER to get pain meds..... so they will hear how I feel about their fine care....

Oh and the cost of a vacuum piston\slide is damn outrageous.... they were a bit pricey before but damn.....lol
Though I need a set to get the final step to dial in for the new exhaust as I don't want to drill the HRC slides I have in there.

Malc, I rebuilt my Penske shock myself, just got it gassed up by Harris (local to me). Spa design can supply any spares you need, I've got the number if you need it. They're a good shock mate, don't give up on it.

Hawk, sorry to hear about the medical issues mate, hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, the standard shock is going back on for now so it's at least rideable, got the spring off and painted it silver as the yellow was scabby with rust spots showing (silver cause that's what I had)

I'll strip and have a look at the Penske Kev, but I think something's broken inside, the shaft shouldn't rock sideways, if I can get the parts it needs i'll rebuild it but I'd have to sent it off to be gassed up, I'm in Devon you know

Cheers Kev, where abouts are you going ?

Today I've put the standard shock back in, for now. Phoned K tech and they can rebuild the shock for £115 + vat + parts, might strip it myself first to see if it's anything obvious, if it look like I can fix it then I would need it gassed.

Malc, I sent my Penske to Roger D for a refurb/service and Roger found the rod connected to the rebound adjuster broken! 8O No wonder it was like riding a wild boar on speed! It may just be that!? Don't give up on it mate and I hope its nothing major

About an hour and half to 2hours from me, I'm up in Bideford, I wouldn't make you come so far out of your way but thanks for the offer  Think I'll strip it and see if it's the same problem Watty had.
