Must admit I wondered about the amount of slack when i saw the oil pump drive chain for the first time.
But there's not much load on it, and it's not slack enough to jump sprocket teeth, or jump off.
If you shortened it, it would have to be by a whole link or half a link, and I don't think that there's enough slack to do that, so you're stuck with it.

I suppose you could make and fit a little tensioner, but TBH it's just one more thing to go worng/fall off.
Anyway, as the engine only ever runs in one direction it just runs tight on the pull side and slack on the - er- slack side.

I'll definitely put my name down for the coolant offer- once the hi comp's are in I expect a hotter   engine.
Oh, and one update, the cam grinder has promised that they'll be machined on Monday.
Mind you, he's ben making promises since April- good job they're not my only set.......
how does it come, big container or little bottles?

Obviously I'll sort postage and packing costs.

Re the rag method, I'm already a bit concerned abotu how good that ball bearing is behind the clutch, but on the crankshaft they are plain journals- just liuke the big ends- and so the sideways load without the engine running means you are forcing the crank onto the journal.
And that clutch centre nut is tight enough to need a breaker bar, or in my case a socket with a length od scaffold pipe on it. So there is plently of force being applied.

Lastly, just to check, the judder spring sits against a thin metal spacer (the "seat") which fits behind it.
It doesn't run directly in the machined groove in the aluminium clutch housing.
The spacer- "spring seat" according to Honda- is just a plain bit of steel, so should be reversible easily enough.

Did you have a big, thin washer left  over, by any chance?
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

was no big thin washer, either in the assembly i took out or the ones you (kindly) sent...

it just looked like the other metal plates, but had a circular groove about 12 thou worn into it.
i replaced it with another metal plate that didnt have a mark on it...
not had an opportunity to strip it today - wanted to know if it was just a flat battery earlier (it was) and not some other problem caused by riding 3hrs in torrential rain, seems ok now.
i'll sort it in the week, or at least make sure there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.
maybe fit my friction plates which are good, against your metal plates, which are in as new condition.

if that doesn't work i'll either get a set of ebc or bite the bullet & fit a barnet with new basket, springs plates etc.

also, i was surprised how weak the std springs are... think i'll have to order up some replacements.
last time i did this i used valve springs off a mini & they worked great but obviously the clutch felt heavier!

i saw some uprated springs for sale somewhere for £13... if i find them i'll post a link here for the uneducated masses

re the coolant, i get it in 25L tubs, but i'll pack up 5L for you and see what the postage is - shouldnt be much.
need your addy again tho as ive cleared my pm box again!

OK, PM'd and I'll send you an anti-judder spring and seat as a free gift.
Chances are they stayed in the clutch basket when you took the clutch pack out.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

even more baffled.....
done nearly 600 miles on this clutch now and rode it hard today, not a problem at all, dunno if its just took this long to absorb oil or if there was uneven wear or somat, but today & and yesterday, no grab at all, working absolutely fine.
i'll continue to test it and see if i can make it grab... still a bit wary of fast high rev starts in case it does grab and lob me off lol.... no sign yet though... seems ok? :confused
