Re: help cold starting a vtr 1000
That's sh1t news mate. Engines shouldn't be too much of a drama to find though, although not sure how many you can get to in NZ. Good luck buddy

yeah thats the trouble here parts are pretty hard to find nationally. almost everything is stocked in aus when it comes to motor parts.
found this full motor in the states...pretty reasonable price!

just want to make sure it will run ok with the wiring loom I have, assuming the year doesn't matter between 97 and 01?

Re: help cold starting a vtr 1000
guys...I've found a local complete motor just 5 mins down the road, but its a 2006. Wouldn't be an issue if I re-wired the buggy with the new loom etc as everything is included, eco, carbs, airbox etc but to save me the hassle I'd prefer to drop it in and simply 'plug' anything back in, as electrics isn't my strong point!
So does anything know if the wiring looms changed? ecu? As far as I can tell from the photos the physical layout looks the same, engine mount locations, heads etc.
appreciate the advice.....

It'll be fine.
The later loom goes with the later Ecu and igniter, but you should be able to just plug it in and start using your previous loom and boxes.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

well she's a runner
dry compression 135-140 with 50,000k's, didn't think it was too bad, runs well.
She'll be back on the gravel tomorrow!

Well done ,
One question !? What exhausts are you running ?
The later engine has a pairs system and if your running open pipes you'll need to remove the pairs system .

ah yeah I noticed that...I just left it as is as I don't actually know what it does? Actually thought it was some type of breather for the top of the rockers?
Its got a straight aftermarket pipe, so I guess I'll remove it if thats whats needed! I can block off the hole in the airbox and just replace the cam covers with ones off the old engine?

Re: help cold starting a vtr 1000
oh yeah one other thing, the radiator fan is now not working - its not off a vtr so hard for you guys to help, but it worked fine before and ran for a couple of minutes after switching engine off.
Theres just one electrical plug connecting straight into the loom so that should be fine (same cables as before, no new ones) only difference is the thermostat - possibly the coolant temp sensor? any common faults?
also - there a sensor (assumed) at the rear of the case below engine number, is this the gear sensor?
