The problem with discussions like this is its very easy to bring up the arguement that any slaughter is unkind, and I would agree however I think when a form of slaughter is ' Cruel.er. ' and its on the grounds of religion then I am in agreement that it should be banned.
Without getting into a baiting of immigrants arguement I do sometimes think there is a minority of muslims that are trying to see how far they can push the bar before people snap.

this was covered on countryfile TV program this week and a Halal slaughter house let the cameras in to show what was being done.........which is fairly brave........ the animals were clearly well looked after and the conditions in the holding pens was good and animals were acting calm.
the Halal & Kosher requirement is that the words of a prayer are being read at the time of death, so the slaughter man is reciting the prayer for each slaughter. what they stated was 95% of Halal meat was stunned before having its throat cut [this is normal process for any slaughter house, only with a prayer added], but 5% was without stunning as there are those that believe that the animal cant hear the prayer if it is unconcious, so the meat would not be Halal. the meat would then be sold as Halal stunned or Halal unstunned [those might not be the correct wording, but they would be marked].
the bigger issue was Kosher,.... 100% of that meat is unstunned, they all believe that the animal must hear the prayer. the spokesman for the Jewish community was keen to point out that it is about the whole animal life and how it is cared for, not just the last 3 seconds, and he would ask that people might want to understand the poor practices that are applied in the other types of factory farms slaughterhouses and also how many time the method of killing failed the first time!
I am bringing this up for 2 reasons:
1) its not the muslim / Halal that is the biggest issue, its the Jewish / Kosher
2) a farming process and slaughter house where they treat the animals with respect is the most important

If they need to hear the Prayer, then that must mean that the animals speak and understand the language.

Interesting info that Al.

1) yes I agree, not many people bring up Kosher, if Halal was banned this would also come under that, I also think that the whole way slaughter is carried could be looked into.
2) I think that should be the norm and nothing to do with slaughter methods of a religion.
I dont know if people realise, but Muslims can eat non halal meat and even eat pork when they have no other options.

Not just mammals…
Do lobsters, crabs and other crustaceans feel pain? We certainly act as if they don’t, cramming them in tanks with their claws wired shut, tossing them as if they were a football. And then there’s the cooking itself — most chefs, professional and amateur, cook lobsters and crabs alive, usually by dumping them in boiling water. Along with the melted butter, that’s the appeal of crustaceans — there’s no fresher food. We may feel a frisson of guilt, or maybe just discomfort, when we hear the creatures rattling around the inside of the pot as the water boils. But that feeling usually dissolves for lobster lovers by the time we crack open a claw and dig out the succulent meat. We wouldn’t dream of doing the same thing to a live chicken or pig, which are dead well before the cooking process begins, but those vaguely insect-looking crustaceans are different. They don’t even feel pain. Right?
