I have been puzzling over the lack of major problems with this project. The timing checks out, the CCTs do not appear to be compromised and yet there was a noise issue. I pulled the Two Brothers exhaust system apart and found that the PO assembled it with the exhaust gaskets well down the pipe. It was VERY loose. I am wondering if the noise didn't come from the front head but it was actually a resonance in the exhaust pipe? This is driving me crazy since the only way to tell for sure is to fix it and start it. In the mean time I have to work and wait for parts.

What about the exhaust gasket hidden by the swing arm on the rear. That one can blow out and sound a little fluttery when it does. Could easily be mistaken for a slightly loose cam chain. When it gets really bad, it will also cause a lot of popping off throttle when slowing down.
Might be worth a look.

I got my Polaris brass choke parts in the post today. I immediately put on all my warm clothes and made hast to the shop. It is stayed just above freezing here but it has been wet and I guess I am feeling the cold more. I do not have a mill or lathe but I do have a battery powered hand drill (pretty slow) and a keen eye. I made modifications to both parts taking extra care. The drill will bite into that soft brass in a hurry so I didn't rush things. It took some time but I now have a working choke set that will outlast the bike. I am waiting on my eBay purchased compression tester. Since I am here it only seems prudent to check everything. My plugs and exhaust gaskets still have not turned up at my door.

You're making progress Jim, that's the main thing :thumbup: I know all about wrapping up to try and stay warm in the workshop when it's cold out :) My next workshop must have heating,

I hear ya bout the heat but I have this paranoia about fire and sources of combustion. I have too many things with gas tanks sitting around to make me comfortable with heat in the shop. Plus, it usually doesn't stay this cold here. I supposed to warm up into the 60s this weekend. We just haven't seen much of the sun for the last few weeks. Depressing.

I appreciate that, you have to be sensible with flammable materials around. What you need is some sort of heating that is enclosed, not one of those flame thrower type garage heaters :lol:

Today was the day. I got the manual CCTs installed and I got everything buttoned up. I fired it up and discovered that the previous owner was correct. There is a tapping/knocking going on down in the engine room. It is pretty loud, so loud in fact that I have not had the guts to rev it past 2K. I made a video if anyone has any thoughts.

I know that noises are hard to communicate via video, the sound quality is hardly stealer, but what I hear has a tapping sound like metal being tapped lightly with a machinist hammer. The sound increases with the rev and grows louder. I have hear rod knocks but this sounds different.

Tighten the nuts anyway, you can't always feel a blow from right up by the head, get your socket ready, start it up and try tightening them, if It starts to quiet down you know it's the problem, get new gaskets and check the pipes for cracks.
