Kitten? It'll lick itself clean and be reusable. Romans used to have em on a stick for wiping.

Seeing another bloody cyclist campaign on the news and stupid wing mirror stickers. What a total waste of time. Half the cyclists in London don't even use the cycle lanes. They are the same as motorcyclists......two wheels weaving in and out of the traffic and travelling down the centre of the road most of the time. It's about time they started campaigning for motorcyclist awareness as well and put us in the same boat as cyclists. There is no difference except and engine. errrr hold on, no...cyclists have an engine too. It called legs.

got up to find a sodding great rat on the bird table, looks like it's living in the garage GRRR! and the bloody cats not interested you'd think a big ginger tom would love chasing a rodent around the garden if it was tuna flavoured he'd be all over it. fecking useless animal.

Don't feed it for a week then it'll go after it .
Them next door have 4 bird tables and when we first moved into the house the back garden was overgrown .
One day I was in the garden having a smoke and the lady next door screamed !!!! Me being me I asked if she was ok ?
She said "no I've just seen a rat coming out your garden now will you sort it out"
My answer was if you didn't feed them they would come ! She didn't know what to say
At the time I had two cats so I didn't feed them for a week and wala 6 dead rats by the back door ,shortly after I leapt the fence and left the rat remains on there bird tables :-)

Your best option is to shoot the fecker !

If you don't have one beg or borrow one any .177 0r .22 should do the trick but you have to be patient, dusk is best time to plot up & wait.

As Lloydie says remove the food source & they will go elsewhere to look for food.

In the garage have a look around for droppings it will confirm their presence, rats tend to crap in one area unlike mice who crap all over the place.

Image
See how the droppings are grouped together...
Image
Here the rats were coming in in the far corner notice the size of the droppings using the cupboard leg as scale.

Size wise mouse droppings are about the size of a grain of rice but a little fatter, whereas rat droppings are approx 10 x bigger.

The other signs to look for are holes which you can see tooth marks around the edge. & smear marks, this is the natural grease that is on the fur rubbing off & then dirt & dust sticking to it.

Image
This is from mice but you get the same from rats only bigger !

Also look for shredded paper & cardboard which the will use for nesting material.

They can & will chew on wiring & wood on stuff to sharpen their teeth. Known as Gnaw marks again you will see the tooth marks if this is happening.

Rats also require standing water to drink so if you have a pond cover it with mesh if poss.

The chances are that the rats are in burrows underneath the garage if it has a concrete foundation, have a look around for any holes about 3''to 4'' in diameter. Clear any rubbish, over growth, rubble away that is around the garage as well.

ALWAYS ware gloves ! Rat pee carries a nasty virus called Leptospirosis ( known as Weil's disease), it can be passes to humans via rat pee in water via open wounds or scratches...Flu like symptoms but it can kill you !

You can poison them of course but the poison will take about 24 hrs to work & in that time they could go anywhere so you could end up with a dead rat under the floor which you can smell but not get to !

This stuff is available in most DIY stores & supermarkets.

Image
It's a grain treated with poison & should do the trick. Indoor use only ! This is no weaker than the stuff I use at work just smaller amounts.

If you cant do the poison use traps, the best type is the old style snap trap like this...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/4-X-LARGE-RAT ... 417d0765d3

Must be for rat & not mouse ones as they are much smaller. Bait with peanut butter or meat. Check daily & place against wall so that the trap closes towards the wall.

This mouse was unavailable for comment earlier today.

thanks for the input, spotted 2 of the little bast##ds now, they are coming out of a hole in the decking which was cut out for a apple tree, they come out of the hole up the bird table for the bird food, so I'd guess they are under the decking but I have recently found evidence of rodents in the garage, they were nesting under the freezer so I've cleaned all that out so they are no longer in the garage maybe I've just forced them to move from the garage to under the decking, thing is I was pretty sure rodents in the garage were mice although TBH I didn't take much notice of the droppings when I cleared out the nest etc but I cleared the garage nests out Weds and now I’ve got rats in the garden (and they are definitely rats) which seems too much of a coincidence so I’m guessing I’ve simply displaced them, unfortunately I no longer own an air rifle ( I’ve got a pal in the police but I think a Glock 17 or HK semi auto may be over kill ) so I’ve put a tray of rodine down the hole in the decking and hopefully they’ll eat that and it’s bye bye rat, well I’ll be…as I’m typing this now and the bast##d thing is back on the bird table a Glock seems quite a good idea about now right I’m off to get a rat trap!!!
