Put the re-jetted carbs and "filtered" lid on today...... looks awesome. The front of the tank is lifted slightly and the foam seals up against the tank right to the front, leaving the front "mouth" open. The air is now fre to come in from the normal area (directly behind the steering head) as well as from the gap at the front of the tank; she won't be starving for air now :)

Looking forward to firing it up when the temps warms a bit.

Inspired by the lid portion of this:

I set about thinking and came up with this (sorry for blurry pics):

The idea here is to build on the Roger D’s lid-less configuration (including positioning the filter directly above the bell-mouths) while at the same time creating more free space above the stacks for improved airflow. A slight increase in post-filter volume should also help slightly….

Before anyone makes a comment, yes it’s been a long winter, lol. Also, I like to experiment and the cost for this is minor, the main investment being in time and effort…..

I now have two lids to try and see what gains, if any, will be achieved...... fun times ahead when the weather warms, lol

The problem with that on is the tank rests on most of the lid and will stop airflow .
I tried it early last year with a k&n and it wouldn't rev :-(

Looking closer at the pics I see you've lowered the lid .
How much room do you have between the top and the underside of the tank !

Have a closer look at the pictures..... the lid height has been cut down to address this very issue. Also, the front of my tank is lifted slightly to encourage airflow......

Anyhow, if it doesn't work, oh well........

I have not fitted it yet so I can't give a firm answer as to tank clearance. I have cut it down in an angled fashion (same at rear, about 2 inches at the front). In theory, there won't be a great deal of air coming in from the rear (it would be warm air anyhow so I don't really want it getting in) while it should be quite good for airflow from the sides and mostly from the front. Time will tell......

No it's a good mod that's why I tried it last year .
When I tried to Lower the lid to get more space I over cooked it and it went soggie !!

What filter have you used ??

I used a K&N filter no. TB-9097, for Triumph Tiger/Sprint/Speed Triple 97-06, dimensions are 229 x 100 mm; I think the actual filter area is less than the OEM filter, but the intake area is MUCH greater than the area of the snorkel (limiting factor) on a stock lid....

I had to do a lot of cutting and plastic welding to get it together as cutting it at an angle messed with the length.....

I recessed the filter into the lid (shaved the upper portion of the filter to reduce the amount of recess I had to use, thereby maximizing "head space" over the stacks) so as to have a smooth surface on top, in the hope of reducing turbulence (FWIW, in Roger's set-up, he states that the filter retaining ring must be no taller than 10mm else it creates a lot of turbulence, so a flush fit should be ideal).

Not sure which of the two set-ups will work best. The first "design" offers greater (post-filter) volume and should provide very good airflow into filter. The second edition, however, has the filter directly over the bellmouths......

I just had a peek under the tank of my curretn filter and saw that it's a pretty tight fit between the sides of the lids (angle area) and the underside of the tank so I will cut and smooth that out to create for space for airflow..... that should be it.....

Take the foam off the underside; that should help a bit.
As well as adding spacers under the front tank mounts, you can also add a few mm spacer dthe rear tank mounting bolt plate, and slightly longer bolts.
Trouble is you're also raising the cog.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

Very interesting Mik. You got to try these things, every project needs to start somewhere. Some you win some you loose but you don't know until one tries ay. Keep up the good work.

underside foam is already gone. Front of tank is also already upped a few mm. As for the rear, I ran it up last season for a bit and may do so again, we'll see. Problem with raising either end of the tank is that you are limited as the tank holes no longer line up......
