Performance upgrades (HELP ME!!)

Post by RK6 »

Had a wee jaunt up to Japerformance (Ellon) with some of the Aberdeen Bikers on Saturday morning to get the bikes dyno'd

My storm is sitting at 99.8bhp ATW. . .

It's basically standard on the performance side of things. . . Race cans but thats about it. . .

I just bought a Colex Mod chip through Ebay that claims to give you an extra 15bhp (yeah right  ) Worth a try though!

Just wanted to ask you lot if you had any ideas on how to get more power out of these things without going totally nuts?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Oh and incase i haven't introduced myself already. . .

My names Rowan, Stay in Aberdeen and have a 2003 1000f 8)

Hi Rowan.

Ive now swapped my VTR but had it rolling roaded a while back.

Mine was making about 106 BHP at the rear wheel. It had a full stage one dyno kit, carbon can co cans and a K&N filter. When I spoke to the bloke at the dyno place he told me most VTR's they'd had in made around 97-100BHP. I wouldn't worry about your results too much.

It might be worth fitting a dynojet kit and getting the bike set up properly to see improvement.

Cheers.

As far as I know it was the earlier (16ltr tank) models which had slightly more BHP, around 105, where as the later 19ltr models produced around 100bhp :!: Thats with bikes in standard form :!:

Chris.

PS. That micro-chip upgrade is meant for fuel injected bikes if it's the one I've seen advertised on Ebay. The Firestorm isn't injected, it has two huge carbs instead :!:

The chip was advertised as being designed for the superhawk and Firestorm. . .

Says something about it plugging into the ECU to tell the bike that all air going through the airbox is very cold thus advancing the ignition and creating more power. . .

Kind of worrying but it was not expensive so we'll soon see if it works. . .

Cheers Chris :!:

Beat me to it Chris.

Best way to increase useable road power/speed/pickup?

Lower the gearing by 5% or so, sort the suspension and it should be fast enough for most I'd say (on the road, if not on the track)
Two bikes, still only four cylinders!

Ok,

Just sent an e-mail to the knob selling the chips asking why it is advertised to work with my bike even though i have been told explicitly that it will not. . .

If i was to buy a tooth down sprocket for the front and a tooth up for the back would it be worth my time?
Yeah the bike is quick(ish) but who doesnt want more power :?:

Cheers for the advice folks, if anyone has any other ideas then im all ears :P

You would have to buy two sprockets then, not just one :)

I've gone two up on the back and its made a really worthwhile difference without being silly gearing and still with standard chain. Somewhere on here, if you search, there are tables showing the effect on the gearing of one off the front etc.

Really is the best mod I have done (that and the digigear indicator)

I've complained about his listings to ebay several times. They keep popping up.

I mailed the guy and explained the FireStorm is carbed and his kits are for FI bikes, but he just mailed me back in bad English "kit is for fuel injection"

As you've paid out, you might have better luck. Demand ebay do something about it.

Mine dynoed at 107 RWBHP stock + race cans. Its on the dyno being set up for a K&N air filter and Factory Pro tuning kit just now, so I'll let you know figures when I get them.

Performance mods: [prices are guestimates based on what I've seen or bought]

Change to 15/43 gearing (1 down front, 2 up back from stock) Fit a Speedohealer (cool plug in box that adjusts your speedo reading to be bob on) I'm running 15/41 on mine, but will be 15/43 next chain and sprockets I put on. [£110 ish for chain and sprockets, £60 for Speedohealer]

K&N (or BMC or Pipercross etc) air filter [£60 ish]

Dynojet or Factory Pro stage 1 carb kit. [£40-£80]

Set of race exhausts. [£120-£500+]

Braided brake lines. [£30 ish]

Get it set up.

Thats about it for basic stuff. This should get you around 110 RWBHP. Then you get into spending some money:

Revolution Racing fork upgrade + Penske shock (or Maxton, Hyperpro, Ohlins, Racetech all make Storm parts) [budget £700]

Moriwaki or Yoshimura cams. [£200 + fitting]

Stage 2 or 3 tuning (gas flow, porting, blue printing, overbored pistons etc [exceedingly expensive]) [£LOTS]

520 chain conversion [£120 ish]

K1 GSXR1000 6 pot calipers + radial master cylinder. [£100 (2nd hand bits)]

Akrapovic titanium full race system. [£1200]

If you're feeling suicidal, you can even get supercharger and turbo kits for it as well as NOS.

Mario Nava and Carbotech carbon fibre bodywork and tank [£LOTS]

If you really want it go faster, paint it Silver.
