Hi Guys,

Reason for my lack of posting is ive been working flat out on the bike! So very close to getting her back however (you knew that was coming didnt you..)

Just about to put the rear wheel back on and found the "distance collar" lying next to it! Obviously this is ment to sit between the two bearings inside the wheel. It doesnt seem to be a very good fit around the axle and certainly didnt fit that well inside the wheel...

...do i really have to take the bearing out again and fit this or can i safely leave it??? It took me about an hour to get the bearing in :-( What does it actually do?

Thanks in advance!

Oh mate I feel for yer, I dont think you are going to like the answers. I have looked at the PDF and I would say that the spacer is essential, bearings do not like side loads and will fail prematurely if that spacer is not fitted. Even worse though you may need another set of bearings! Only you know how tight the bearings are in their respective housings so although not definate you may cause damage on removal. You dont want to rebuild then find one of the bearings lasts for 200 miles :(
Good luck buddy hope its an easy fix.

Toby you must fit that tube back in if it's definitely the one that sit's between the bearings :!:

The reason it's there is to stop the bearings being locked solid when you tighten up the axle nut :!: It basically keeps the center's of the bearings spaced the correct amount :!:

thats EXACTLY the sort of thing i was expecting! (cheers for the swift replies by the way)

Any ideas on how i could get the bearing out without mullering it? ive tried gently tapping with a screwdriver on the inner collar but to no avail and dont want to smack it too hard in case i slipp or it damages it!

Ouch! what a palaver for ya - glad you got it rolling again

Did you remember to grease up the bearings before reinstalling?

Plus how did your CSS website assignment turn out?

Yes, even cycled to halfrauds to buy grease, everything has had liberal amounts.

Well, i got a poo mark which upset me, however i got the work back and he had written "this looks very much like a "borrowed" template"...so i stormed into his office with my PSD files etc and then he was well impressed...so yes it went down well and i learnt loads! Done two more since then and your advice was priceless mate! Im guessing your in the web design industry? its interesting but i prefer full on graphic design, even graphics for web applications!

Well done Toby :!: :D You were very fortunate to get a bearing out without damaging it. Patience payed off I'd say :!:
