Running cost comparison

aside from insurance, is there much difference to the running costs of a Firestorm and an SP2?

Petrol? Much the same.
Tyre?....my old SP1 could eat a rear 2CT under 1100 miles (and I am a slow rider).
Crashing and repairs? I would guess that the SP1 would be far more expensive due to the plastics.
You will need to factor in a power Commander and custom map for the SP1...it will transform the bike.

I was thinking sp2, they seem to be priced to sell at the moment and its a potential opportunity to snap up a modern classic.
However I don't suppose rears last any longer on them!!!

I actually get better mileage out of the SP2 doing the same sort of routes I used to take on the Storm. I'm using sportier tyres so they don't last as long but on the whole I haven't noticed any real difference. Services are at 9k intervals, first major one is at 18k (still change the oil and filter inbetween though) so I reckon it's pretty even.
