my main gripe about public transport (only been on a bus once in the last 37 years cos of it) is that you've no idea what level of scumbag is gonna plonk itself next to you. and there's no denying scumbagginess is rather more prevalent these days

When I bought my zed it was off a guy in Barnett, London. No probs I thought, I'll just get the train down there and ride it back. Wrong. They wanted something extortionate like £95 or thereabouts.

I then priced it up from Birmingham (which is not even halfway from here to London) and it was £13.

WTF is all that about?

So as my wife has family in Brum, we arranged to drive down and see them, then she dropped me off at the train station so I could travel on to London. Sorted, and much much cheaper than getting the train.

See how privatisation has helped to increase competition and therefore provide a better end service to consumers.......

Train ticket prices can change dramtically if you only use one service provider eg. GNER or Virgin, when you cross jurisdictions then it can be verrrry expensive. also booking in advance can reduce fares dramatically. Finally its often cheaper to book over the phone.

back in 1977 the staff at Kings Cross kindly put my shiny new 750-4 in the guards compartment on the Darlington train for me (it was xmas and pissing down so I didn't fancy the long ride home to Middlesbrough). I went for a quick coffee in the station cafe, came out . . . . . & hopped on the Birmingham train

I,m afraid to say it down to our own fault. We all moan about things in this country but always wait until some one else does some thing about it for us. Imagin if every one that uses the transport system all agreed on the same day not to use it. They would lose millions . It,s the same with petrol . pick on one supplier inform them what is about to happen and on what start date then boycote it. It would drop it,s price dam quick, then the others would follow. simple but we dont stick together . I even had a pakastaini say that to me one day.

I accept your argument but isnt that the point of having an elected government? We complain or vote in the MP with the right policies (cheap transport blah blah) Strikes and boycotts just end up costing the taxpayer millions as well as the large companies. The country needs a huge shake up but no one embraces change with a smile on their face, usually the change starts off with a massive crash of some sort (wages, house prices)

Maybe the vast majority are as I like to call them, the great unwashed . However when you have any army of that size , it, sbest to keep them sweet or your only going to creat a major problem for youself.
Take for example next year your bike tax is going to double, why. This is because all the rich peole that can afford to buy a certain type of car that is meant to reduse carbon emmisions wil be either tax exempt or even cheaper than your bike . Therefore, they will get the loss back from thoughs that carnt afford to buy new and will end up paying for those that can.

For gods sake can they not see that people that use bikes of all makes and models are actually helping the situation, ie fuel usage and road congestion. No there going to make it easier and cheaper for car drivers to be on the roads than bikes .

No idea, also why is it that the rest of Europe has an effective, cheap railway service where as we are ass fu**ed for trying to stay out of vehicles (not literally of course)
