The Ayrshire chapter of this fine site (well me and bikerpiker anyway) decided to have a wee run ourselves yesterday. A wee trip down Dumfries direction, a bit of a play up in the hills before heading back home through Galloway forest. Sorry about the crappy phone camera pics but someone forgot to charge his camera batteries (not me)

5 miles further on and we come to Wanlockhead, the highest village in Scotland. Parked outside the Leadhills mining museum. Area is best known for gold mining and you can still go along and stand up to your knees in a river and pan for gold if that's your thing.


Head on to Elvanfoot and take the A702 to Carronbridge, the Dalveen Pass. I think this is now Stevies new favourite road. 15 miles of bliss. Road starts off climbing over the moors and then into the mountains and then drops quickly down into farmland. Very little traffic and twisty bits all the way
Had to steal someone else's pic for this bit as it was just too good to stop.

Took a bit of a wrong turn after this and instead of taking the main road home, too what ended up as a single track forest road for 15 miles. Turned out to be a cracking road. 15 miles and the only other thing on the road was one bike heading in the other direction.

Shame we couldn't get down and join everyone else for the big run but at least he had some fun ourselves.

That looks like a nice bit of road Rich and the accidental single track bit too.

Will have to look it up if I ever manage to get over the border on me Storm.

At least you two had a good run out even if it was probably the smallest meet so far this year

Hang on a minute,,,, isn't Elvanfoot where the M74 climbs to it (quite a steep hill) between heavily wooded valley? Railway runs parallel with Mway for a while?

Isn't there what looks to be a mound or man made hill somewhere round there too? on a large plane on the left heading towards Glasgow

Could be way off, but seems familiar from when we're dragging the van up to Kintyre each August.

Correct to the first bit and don't know to the second bit.

Its manmade and on a hill,you might be able to see it from the M74.

Was a great route ,nice area and not too far away, pity the camera man couldnt take pics withoot gettin wheelie bins in them

It looks like either a very large spoil heap from a mine or earth working of some kind or a big round man made hill or barrow of some sort.

The area immediately around it is really flat - could be a lot further South or a bit further North I suppose Just think it looks interesting when I pass it - well anything's more interesting than motorway driving, apart from HD MC's of course.

Cheers Rich - thought I was somewhere near with that bit at least. Big concrete bridge / aquaduct at top of hill iirc. Very pretty valley really - and if that smashing looking road is at one end of it it's deffinitely worth a trip up me thinks.

Maybes have to pack the tent up if we get a fine weekend.

Unreal how empty the roads were , in this area most of the tourists, day trippers ,and bikers seem to head for the coastal routes (usually me included), ..but did really enjoy this wee run

Loads of great twisties to be taken advantage of, but i was trying to take in the scenery at the same time,as id never been on a few of the roads

they gave us concessionary rates for the tents - £11 per tent for 2 nights & same deal for next year!

Yep, same area mate, Brighouse Bay near Kirkudbright ,not far from the route we took at all

Other great scenic routes as well,as RedstormV will agree, Arran, Oban, Campbeltown, Kintyre etc,but just a bit further North for some of you guys.

we only had one run out from the campsite (having arrived fri evening, left sunday morning) on the saturday - around st mary's loch. its just whetted the appetite for more of that fantastic scenery, yer really lucky stewards up there

St Mary's Loch near Moffat Aye, good roads about there as well, me n a few mates were there a few months ago .
