The European Health Insurance card replaced the old E111 in 2005. I have just had a letter from the NHS reminding me that they expire in "3-5" years and to check mine. In fact, mine expired in October 2008 and I wouldn't have known otherwise.

Quite why they couldn't send me a replacement at the same time as writing to me is a mystery, but so many things are these days.
